Any birth can be challenging, but a home birth where you don’t have the advantages of a hospital facility available can be somewhat more dramatic. Jessa Duggar just gave birth to her first son, Spurgeon Elliot Seewald. Mother and son are now fine and together, but the birth was difficult. I can relate… both mine were as well. Jessa was in labor for 48 hours. The pain was intense and at one point after ten hours of excruciating pain, she asked to go to the hospital and get an epidural. She eventually decided against that, but wound up in the hospital anyway. She bled excessively after the birth and had to be rushed to the hospital for a blood transfusion. Her husband brought the newborn to the hospital to be with her. After a long birth, Jessa was rewarded with the most precious gift of her life.

From the Daily Mail:

Jessa Duggar Seewald was bleeding so heavily following the birth of her son she needed a blood transfusion after being rushed to hospital.

As DailyMail.com exclusively revealed, her mom Michelle Duggar called 911 after the midwife became concerned about Jessa at the end of a 48-hour labor and delivery.

Now it’s been revealed by People magazine that the 23-year-old had to spend a night in the hospital missing out on those precious first minutes with her newborn.

‘I had dreamed about those first moments, getting to breastfeed right away, all that. And so when I had to go to the hospital, it was a shock,’ Jessa told People.

‘I tried to keep my head. I was awake and alert,’ she said, adding that ‘everyone stayed calm.’

In the initial stages of labor, the pain was so bad that the reality star almost gave up on having a natural birth.

‘Labor is hard,’ she told People. ‘It was very intense, very long. Everything was different than I expected.’

After 10 hours of contractions, she asked to be taken to hospital to get an epidural.

‘They asked me if I really wanted to do that and I said, ‘No, I don’t, but I do.’ I wanted to try natural if at all possible,’ she said.

But despite her decision to stick to a natural delivery, she ended up in hospital anyway after bleeding out following the arrival of her son on November 5. Her baby was brought to her once it became clear she’d have to be admitted for the night.

Jessa’s husband Ben Seewald, 20, admitted it was tough and ’emotionally difficult’ to watch his wife go through so much.

‘I was trying to keep it positive,’ he said. ‘There were a few times, she was like, ‘I can’t do this.”

The first photo of the newest addition to the Duggar clan was released via social media shortly after his birth, showing the baby boy wrapped in a brown towel.

It wasn’t until the next day that the family finally shared a picture of Jessa with Ben and the baby.

Now back at the home where she gave birth, mother and the as yet unnamed child are doing well.

‘I can’t believe he’s really ours,’ Jessa said. ‘It is so amazing. He’s a miracle.’

The 911 call made by Michelle, 49, and obtained exclusively by DailyMail.com revealed the drama behind the birth.

In the emergency call, Michelle tells the dispatcher: ‘There was quite a bit of blood when the placenta detached, but uterus is hard now.’

She is then heard saying, ‘We’re massaging your uterus. Hang in there.’

The 911 dispatcher instructed them to wrap the afterbirth in a towel for the doctor to examine to make sure it all came out.

When asked how the newborn is, the Michelle replied that, ‘Baby is doing wonderful. Baby is great.’

New father Ben, however, updated fans on Friday writing on TheSeewaldfamily.com: ‘Our sweet baby boy was born last night…He’s precious and both he and Jessa are doing great.’

Jessa’s older sister Jill had also planned for a home birth, but ended up having an emergency C-section after more than 70 hours of labor in April.

The 24-year-old ended up giving birth in a hospital with her husband Derick Dillard by her side. Baby Israel weighed in at a whopping 9 lbs., 10 oz.

Jessa gave birth in the small house she lives in with Ben, which is owned by her parents Jim Bob and Michelle. It’s where her sex pest brother Josh lived with his wife Anna until they moved to Washington, DC.

The birth of Jessa’s baby boy will be covered on her new TLC show with her sister, which is titled Jill & Jessa: Counting On. The series will not include Josh, who has suffered from a molestation and Ashley Madison scandal this year.

The Duggar’s are a reality television phenomenon. I don’t watch their show and know little about their family other than Josh Duggar’s molestation and infidelity revelations. They are a good looking family and seem to be great people. Long, difficult births seem to run in their family as her sister had to have a C-section after 70 hours of labor. Once again, I can relate as the same thing happened to me when giving birth to my son. One thing I would never do is televise the birth of a child the way they are getting ready to, but then again, the world has changed and not for the better. I believe that should be a private time for family. The little boy is adorable. Congratulations to the proud parents!
