Another series loss is in the books, as the Giants managed to knock off Jon Niese and the Mets to make it two out of three. Both starting pitchers looked good, but the Mets offense did not. Video highlights can be found here, while the full box score is available here.
Some good news for Mets fans would be the potential return of the best player the team currently has. David Wright could return to the lineup as soon as tonight, and would make the final 10 games of the regular season an awful lot more watchable.
We've heard talk about how the Mets and Rockies aren't a particularly good match for Carlos Gonzalez, so the same is probably true for shortstop Troy Tulowitzki. Still, if he's available, you almost certainly have to ask. That said, Terry Collins is currently saying all the right things about Ruben Tejada.

We took a look at the Mets and the reverse standings, ahead of last night's results. Here they are in updated fashion, with the Mets now having a two game cushion as well as the first tiebreaker against the first two clubs in the unprotected picks.
Speaking of losing in September, yesterday gave us a look at the worst closings to past seasons by the Mets. I was legitimately expecting to see at least one of 2007 or 2008 on there.
Around Baseball
The Rays and Rangers ended up splitting their series last night, something that keeps the AL wild card race that much more interesting in the final two weeks of the regular season.
The biggest challenger to either of those teams at the moment is the Cleveland Indians, who knocked off the Astros in extras last night to stay just behind the pair.
John Lackey led the Sox past the Orioles last night, as Baltimore lost some ground on a wild card berth. The Yankees also lost last night, remaining three games back with the time to catch up ticking away. WIN METHOD will not be pleased.
Over on the NL side of things, the Nationals remained on life support with a win over the Miami Marlins. Natitude!
The NL Central is the only race of any note in the NL, and it got a little tighter yesterday with a Pittsburgh win and a St. Louis loss.
