Finding Beauty in Your Own Backyard

~ ZZ Troutski

People are investing more money into maintaining and recreating the back of their house than anything else when it comes to the home improvement realm. This is a great thing. Not only does enhancing the backyard bring a great deal of extra resale value to the property, but it also allows you to enjoy the Great Outdoors without actually having to climb, fish, hunt, hike, etc.. In other words, you can live the outdoor life and read a book on your stunning patio surrounded by your amazing flower garden all at the same time.   Some home improvements do not necessarily mean more money for the owner in the future. Some are simply decorative that the homeowner wants so they can use it far into their retirement years. But when it comes to the world of landscaping, improvements are extremely desirable and definitely bring in the return on investment that you’re looking for.   One improvement has become extremely debatable in this world. There are people who believe that having a smaller lawn with less vegetation and flowers means more money. The upkeep is far easier to do. However, depending on the location of the property, many home seekers are looking, dreaming and focusing on only putting offers down on properties with the big backyard. They want the lawn, they want the huge beds of flowers, with perennials and shrubs used as borders so that the ‘real’ outdoors is just a step away.   Trees are also a huge thing on the list for buyers. They want the old, mature trees that have been around for a good, long time. They want the shade, they want the look, they want that piece of nature as part of their property. Not to mention, trees appreciate over time.   Another huge selling point for a house, as well as a true beauty spot for the homeowner, is having that ultimate patio in the backyard. Whether the lawn is small or amazingly large, that patio, deck, or porch is something that can not be set aside. Being able to relax in the outdoors takes away stress and tension that comes along with daily life, so if you’re looking to get started on a home improvement project, pick the perfect spot to sit and stare out at that landscape you can not do without.   Your backyard is truly a sanctuary. The animals that will love you extra for all the food, shade, and ‘homes’ you provide them are not the only ones that want that sanctuary. There are many ways to make the sanctuary of your dreams, from installing a fountain to extra bushes to creating a small pond that can be filled with fish and call out to the birds that fly by.   Making the right choices, depending on location, is also a must when it comes to landscaping needs. When the polar vortex hits, or the storms actually never seem to end, winter white is not exactly the most colorful or relaxing look for the home. Seeing as that you can’t change Mother Nature (although you would really like to), make sure that your yard is colorful at all times. Flowering shrubs can be added that thrive in the cold months, as well as ornamental grasses.   But let’s be honest, here. Some outdoor projects will just be a ton of fun for the warm weekends ahead; while others will most definitely need a five-year plan to make sure you get exactly what you’re dreaming of in the long run.   And even though there are many professional landscape designers out there, enhancing and beautifying the backyard can most definitely be a DIY project that will bring some fun into the household.   It is absolute magic to watch the backyard become a colorful, stunning, relaxing sanctuary – so make sure to enjoy every minute of it. Because after everything is said, done and planted, you will be loving it for a good, long time to come.
