Blues, rock, roots and Americana all have a promising future in the talented hands of Davy Knowles.
Just six years into his professional music career, Davy has an impressive record of accomplishments. He has been endorsed by some of the biggest names in the industry, and he has shared the stage and the recording studio with some of his heroes.
Born and raised on the Isle of Man (a tiny country located between Ireland and England), Davy fell in love with music making at age 11 when, after hearing the Dire Straits’ classic “Sultans of Swing” on his father’s car stereo, he learned by ear to play it on his father’s guitar. Along with Mark Knopfler, John Mayall and the Bluesbreakers, Peter Green, Eric Clapton/Cream and Rory Gallagher were early, significant influences, and they continue to color his playing and songwriting today.
After a relentless tour schedule for the better part of four years in support of his first two albums (“Roll Away” and “Coming Up For Air”), 2013 has allowed Davy to spend more time writing new music and playing select live shows, including a number of intimate, solo/acoustic dates.
He joined Peter Frampton, a mentor and the co-producer of his sophomore album, for an August date on Frampton’s Guitar Circus Tour, which included a stirring take on “While My Guitar Gently Weeps” that also featured the wizardry of Sonny Landreth (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z45ePUh4So0).
Throughout his career, Davy has been surrounded by great musicians, and he’s made the most of every occasion.
He has played opener slots for Warren Haynes & Gov’t Mule, Jeff Beck, the Sammy Hagar/Joe Satriani “super group” Chickenfoot (Satriani has dubbed Davy, “My new favorite modern-day bluesman.”) The Who, George Thorogood, Kid Rock and Lynyrd Skynyrd. He also played a stint as a member of the Rhythm Devils (founded by Grateful Dead drummers Bill Kreutzmann and Mickey Hart).
Davy’s career has been blessed with some unique opportunities.
In 2009, Davy became one of very few artists to have played directly to the International Space Station (ISS) from Mission Control in Houston, TX. He recorded a song to wake U.S. Astronaut Nicole Stott on the morning of one of her ISS missions. Both Astronaut Stott and Astronaut Ron Garan have taken Davy’s music with them aboard the ISS.
Davy also served as a “bloggernaut” for Astronaut Garan’s Fragile Oasis website. For his efforts, Davy was awarded a plaque by astronauts who flew the last mission on the Discovery Shuttle.
In 2014, Davy will serve the Isle of Man an official Cultural Ambassador in support of Island of Culture 2014, the biggest cultural celebration in the country’s history.
For the past five years, Davy has worked exclusively with Paul Reed Smith (PRS) Guitars. Davy says, “They make the most rock solid, reliable, consistent instruments I’ve ever played, and they require minimal maintenance. The people at PRS are great to work with. Working with PRS, I feel like I’m part of something bigger and greater.”
