REVIEW/AMG
By Greg Prato
When you hear that a member of Dream Theater has launched a side project, it's understandable to assume that it's going to be more of the heavy prog metal that they've become renowned for. But the 2006 release, Cover to Cover, is a true anomaly. Credited to ex-Spock's Beard guitarist Neal Morse, Dream Theater drummer Mike Portnoy, and bassist Randy George, the album features covers by the expected suspects (Cream's "Badge" and the Who's "I'm Free/Sparks"), as well as a few surprises (Joe Jackson's "I'm the Man" and Chicago's "Feelin' Stronger Every Day"). And with covers of Paul McCartney's "Maybe I'm Amazed" and George Harrison's "What Is Life?" (as well as the aforementioned "Badge," which was also penned by Harrison), the trio make no bones about being Beatles worshipers. Not exactly a very necessary release (you can probably stroll down to your neighborhood bar and hear a local band play these tunes), but Spock's Beard and Dream Theater fans who need to own every recorded morsel should enjoy it.

Los Angeles singer/songwriter and guitarist Neal Morse began his musical career early, taking piano lessons at five and performing in musicals and beginning guitar by the age of nine. By the time he reached his twenties, Morse wrote two musicals and played with Al Stewart and Peter White. After returning from an extensive European trip, Morse formed the progressive rock band Spock's Beard with his brother Al; the group released its debut album, The Light, in 1994. In addition to his duties with Spock's Beard, Morse released his self-titled solo debut 1999 on Metal Blade Records, and produced and arranged all of the album's tracks. With 2003's Testimony, Morse began to infuse his deeply held religious convictions into his work, a trend that continued with 2004's One and 2005's ?. In 2006 he collaborated with Dream Theater drummer Mike Portnoy and bassist Randy George on Cover to Cover, yes, a covers collection. Morse resumed that collaboration in 2007 on his highly controversial concept album Sola Scriptura. In 2011, Morse returned to the story he started in 2003 with Testimony Two, which further detailed his spiritual awakening as well as his decision to leave Spock's Beard.

Mike Portnoy was the drummer for Dream Theater. Born in 1967, he began playing drums in his teens for various small bands, including the group Inner Sanctum, which released one album. He attended Berklee Music College and became a founding member of Dream Theater, but announced he was parting ways with the prog act in 2010. He has also been a member of the part-time prog supergroups Liquid Tension Experiment and TransAtlantic.
