Role Description
We are looking for a Communications Intern that will produce and manage strategic communications through traditional and new media channels for Shark Truth’s Happy Hearts Love Sharks wedding, and Fin Free Restaurant campaigns. This is a part-time (3-4 full days spread across a working week) 4-month internship position based out of Vancouver office. The internship is unpaid; however, a stipend will be provided.
Essentials and Responsibilities
Manage, write, and edit Shark Truth’s social networks including our blog, Facebook page, and Twitter account
Design and implement an online engagement strategy through our online newsletters
Create reports and consult staff on strategies to improve online engagement
Plan, research, and write copy for design, fact sheets, press releases, op-eds, and letters to the editor (the latter three requires pitching reporters and media outlets)
Coordinate and/or design images for marketing material (print and web)
Monitor local and international news
Maintain an up-to-date media database to keep us organized
Support the organization’s events through communications and marketing
Support the staff in completing other general administrative tasks
Communications is a core strategy of Shark Truth as our mission is to work cross-culturally to educate and empower individuals and communities to go Fin Free and think in the long-run about ocean sustainability. This means creating effective messages, framing, and stories that connect people to conservation, and empower them to change.

Why Volunteer?
We are a lean but effective organization: in just three years, we’ve diverted over 40,000 bowls of shark fin soup from consumption, saving approximately 4,000 sharks from being eaten. Last year, Shark Truth was awarded as a Tides Top 10 for forward-thinking leadership and vision that demonstrates real-world impact. Our philosophy is to collaborate with stakeholders and create solutions for long-term change within our community.
We are a unique and important voice in the conservation movement and our Founder, Claudia Li, has received numerous awards for her innovative work at Shark Truth including placing as a finalist as a 2012 GLOBE Next Gen Entrepreneur.
It’s going to be an exciting couple months this fall, so this position is going to be a great growth opportunity for those interested working in an entrepreneurial environment on communications strategy and implementation. You’ll also get to meet a team of young, dynamic environmental leaders.
Qualifications/experience:
Self-acclaimed communications nerd: news and social media junky

Initiator, resourceful, and DIY attitude
Final year or completion of post-secondary diploma/degree with a concentration in
Communications, Marketing or related field
Professional or volunteer public/media/communications relations experience
Fervent research bone and curiosity towards communications and social media trends
Strong attention to detail for proofreading, copyediting, and fact-checking
Takes initiative and strong ability to work well independently and in a team
Thrive in a fast–paced, dynamic environment
Strong interpersonal skills: you love to chat, you love to write
Interest in or passion for the mission of Shark Truth and our philosophy of cross-cultural collaboration
Ability to use basic HTML, Photoshop, MS Office (basic document layouts), MailChimp, Hootsuite, WordPress, Facebook Apps/Pages, Twitter, Prezi
A bonus: an ability to speak Cantonese or Mandarin, or read/write Chinese [not mandatory]
