Syrian Foreign Minister, Walid Al-Moallem, held a press conference in Damascus Tuesday in which he said that his country was prepared to confront the whole world in the face of threats of western military action that have followed allegations of the regime using chemical agents to kill more than a thousand Syrian citizens, SANA news reported.

Al-Moallem added that the Syrian government is working for the national interest, warning that using the excuse of a chemical attack on a Damascus suburbs as a pretext for military intervention is old and inaccurate.

"Our defensive techniques will surprise everybody," he threatened.

Al-Moallem said that the West was using the chemical weapons argument as a "pretext" under which to launch a military campaign against Syria, which will ultimately serve the interests of Israel and the al-Qaida-affiliated Nusra Front.

"If this military campaign is meant to morally undermine our people, I believe they are mistaken," Al-Moallem said. "The people of Syria are united together with their armed forces and leadership. This has allowed us to endure. We are prepared to confront the whole world."

Regarding the UN chemical weapons inspectors currently in Syria, he said that the government has been transparent and open in its dealings with the team. He further indicated that the UN unit, which was attacked by sniper fire on Monday, would resume their investigations on Wednesday. He blamed rebels for the delay in proceedings and the attack.

"If they falsely believe that the military strike being planned will undermine our military capabilities currently in eastern Ghouta, I confirm that it will not at all," the minister said.

During the press conference, Al-Moallem claimed that the chemical weapons evidence cannot be destroyed because they are located in areas controlled by rebels, challenging the world to give proof of chemical arms used by the Syrian regime armed forces.

At least four mortar bombs struck a wealthy area of Damascus on Monday morning. An eyewitness told Reuters that one of the mortars fell in close proximity to the Four Seasons hotel, where the UN experts are staying as they investigate claims of chemical weapons use.

SANA reported that the mortar bombs had been manufactured locally and were launched into the capital by "terrorists,” adding one person was wounded, and the mosque's minaret was destroyed.

Later, the convoy of the UN team was targeted by snipers in the buffer zone between the Syrian opposition and regime areas near Damascus, as it traveled to Moadamiya and Ghouta.

World Bulletin news website claimed that three UN staff members were killed and 20 others were wounded. This report was not confirmed by other sources.

Meanwhile, US National Security Adviser, Susan Rice tweeted, "US consulting with Congress & allies about how to respond to this indiscriminate use of CW (chemical weapons) " and "Only regime has capacity to launch CW with rockets.”

In the meantime, US Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel said in a television interview with the BBC on Tuesday that the US military is ready to act immediately should President Barack Obama order action against Syria.

"We are prepared. We have moved assets in place to be able to fulfill and comply with whatever option the president wishes to take," he said.

"We are ready to go, like that."
