Ovarian Cancer Kills 14,000 women a year – Don’t be one of them

I want you to live a rich, full and LONG life. I want the same thing for me and I would have loved it for my Mom as well. She died at age 59 after being diagnosed with Stage IV Ovarian cancer. She was not alone, Ovarian Cancer Kills 14,000 women a year. How can you and I avoid being one of them? Early detection.
The year my Mom was diagnosed she had been flagging in energy. She was a home health aide in the town in which we lived and she would come home at lunch and grab a quick nap. She wasn’t as hungry but didn’t seem to be losing any weight.
She and I had gone out shopping like we did most Saturdays. My Mom was my best friend and as soon as my daughter Emily was born, she was included in our duo. We went out just like normal, I dropped my Mom at her house. She went to bed and basically never got out of it again.
It took a month for my Mother to get a diagnosis and two years after she couldn’t get out of bed, she died after suffering terribly. We were all devastated.
I don’t want this to happen to you or your family. Have some information and know the facts about this silent killer.
What are the symptoms of Ovarian Cancer?
According to the CDC these are the tell tale signs but they can vary for individual women.
Vaginal bleeding or discharge from your vagina that is not normal for you.
Pain in the pelvic or abdominal area (the area below your stomach and between your hip bones).
Back pain.
Bloating, which is when the area below your stomach swells or feels full.
Feeling full quickly while eating.
A change in your bathroom habits, such as having to pass urine very badly or very often, constipation, or diarrhea.
My Mom had all of these which weren’t necessarily unusual for a 57 year old woman. The main thing is that she felt different this time, she was unusually tired and just didn’t talk soon enough to medical personnel.
Do me a favor and see your doctor if you have these symptoms and they just feel different. Know your body. Know your risks.
Don’t just go in for a normal pap smear type appointment. Pap smears are great but they are for cervical cancer detection, very important to do but you need to do more. Read this article from Cancer.org about tests to detect ovarian cancer.
September is Ovarian Cancer awareness month. Ovarian cancer gets a lot less attention than Breast cancer but it’s just as important to know about to protect Women’s lives. Look over the Ovarian Cancer site and learn how to protect your life. And your mother’s. Your sister’s. Your daughter’s. Your friends’ and all the women you love.
And this month, go Teal and raise awareness of this killer. Share any of the above websites, share your story or share this post but let’s get the word out.
