The head of the Fulton County Jail wants to track down the man using his name to try to scam money out of unsuspecting citizens.
“Actually, I thought it was funny at first and then it quickly sank on me that this is very serious–that someone is using my name and official title and position to perpetrate a telephone scam,” explained Colonel Mark Adger who serves as chief jailer with Fulton County Sheriff’s Office.
Robin Green called Adger’s office Wednesday morning after she said her husband got a call from a man who identified himself as Chief Deputy Mark Adger. The man on the line claimed Green’s husband had two warrants out for his arrest for failing to appear for jury duty in Fulton County. According to Green, the caller said her husband’s warrants would disappear if he paid fines of more than $400 by purchasing Green Dot cards from Walgreens.
Green said she called the sheriff’s office to confirm they had an employee by the name Mark Adger.
“That was the scary part about it,” said Green. “That was the reason that it was very believable. It was believable until he asked for money, [be]cause I knew that that was wrong.”
Green described the man on the phone as aggressive and said if it were not for her work experience in the court system, she and her husband may have fallen for the scam.
“If I had not been home, my husband would have paid that money and I know he would have,” explained Green.
Colonel Adger filed a police report with the Atlanta Police Department and said anyone who gets a call from someone claiming to be him should report it to his office by calling 404-612-5101.
“We do not operate like that,” Col. Adger explained. “The sheriff’s office does not operate like that and most other governmental agencies do not operate like that. If there’s a question about whether or not you owe any monies, contact legitimate office and inquire further, but do not pay over the phone with a credit card or a Green Dot card.”
