Londonis a great place to go if you want to take part in a special charity event, perhaps to raise money for a specific cause or just to be part of a larger gathering of people than perhaps one which is taking place in your home town.  With so many people in the city, any event which takes place here has a really special vibe which is just a fantastic thing to be able to be a part of.

Whether you’re an expert at charity challenges or you are looking to make this your first, here are some of our suggestions for charity events taking place inLondonduring 2016:-

The Gherkin Challenge

Help to raise money for the NSPCC whilst climbing the stairs of one ofLondon’s most famous buildings in the Gherkin Challenge which takes place on Sunday 19 June.  You can take part in this challenge on your own, or as part of a team and it costs £20 for an adult entry and £10 for a child entry.  The Gherkin has 38 floors and you must climb them all and reach the top before being greeted with a complimentary glass of champagne (or juice for children) and a massage as well for all your hard effort.  With this challenge you can only raise money for the NSPCC but it is a great and worthy cause; especially when you consider the views you will be rewarded with when you make it all the way up to the very top of this iconic building.  If climbing the stairs feels like too much effort then you can purchase a lift pass; but on this occasion it will cost £50!

Great London Newham Swim

This one mile course is suitable for swimmers of all abilities and ages and will take you around the Royal Victoria Dock.  It’s the largest open water swim in the south of Englandis this year is raising money for Macmillan Cancer Support.  On Saturday 16 July you could join hundreds of other swimmers as they brave the brisk waters in the heart of the Docklands and again, raise money for a very worthwhile cause.  It will certainly be an interesting reason to visit the city!  Of course, safety is a massive priority at an event such as this and there are safety boats and kayaks which track the progress of all the swimmers as they make their way around the dock; the distance swum overall is the equivalent of 63 lengths in a 25 metre pool.  Very little is required other than registration, an ability to swim and a wetsuit…this is summer in Englandafter all.  Although it isn’t a team challenge, it would be very simple to enter as a team; perhaps you could gather some friends together from work and book a stay at one of the business hotels London before heading out to the Royal Victoria Dock.

Steps for Jo’s

This is an annual 5k and 10k sponsored walk (or run) to raise money for Jo’s Cervical Cancer Trust and it takes place at the beginning of Cervical Screening Awareness Week on Saturday 11 and Sunday 12 June at various locations in the UK.  On Sunday 12 June it will take place in Hyde Parkand is a perfect way to not only raise money but also to increase awareness.  It costs just £7 for an adult place, with children under 16 free to enter and is a perfect event for people of all ages and abilities.  If you wanted to take part in the event then the Shaftesbury London Hyde Park would be a great hotel to choose putting you right on the doorstep of the park and the event. Hyde Park itself is a beautiful location to have chosen for the walk and you can take in some of the city’s most iconic sights as you raise money for a good cause.

Pink Ribbonwalk

If you’ve ever wanted to see some ofLondon’s most iconic landmarks illuminated at night then this is the charity event for you.  It costs £30 for an adult to register plus a minimum amount of sponsorship but it provides you with an amazing opportunity to gather together with people, to raise money for Breast Cancer Care and to experienceLondonfrom an entirely new vantage point.  There is a choice of 3 different walk lengths to choose from depending on your ability; 5 miles, 10 miles and 20 miles with each walk taking you past a number of landmarks and attractions includingSt Paul’s Cathedral,BuckinghamPalaceand Westminster Abbey.  All the walks start at theImperialWarMuseumon Saturday 9 July.

Bear Grylls Survival Race

The Bear Grylls Survival Race only made its debut in 2015 but it is back again this year on Saturday 8 October.  It consists of a series of obstacle races and survival challenges and you can choose from a 5K, 10K or 30K Survival Race each featuring different survival ‘zones’ such as the jungle, the desert and theArctic.  There is even a Kid’s Survival Race which is still just as much fun, but smaller in size.  The event supports over 300 different charities so you can choose the one which speaks to you the most and even if you don’t fancy a place on the Survival Race you can still go along and support this fantastic day; there are restaurant pop-ups, licensed bars, prize draws and much more going on making it a fantastic day out for everyone.  Charities supported include WellChild, Barnado’s and Bowel CancerUK.

Of course these are just 5 out of hundreds of amazing charity events which take place each year in London so if the ones we have suggested aren’t up your street then we are certain you will be able to find one which is.
