It wasn’t a pretty week for the Montreal Canadiens. Three games and three losses have them moving down in the overall standings and looking at a four-game winless streak. Things kicked off on Wednesday when the Habs traveled to Pittsburgh to face the Penguins at Consol Energy Center. Rene Bourque put the Canadiens on the board in the first period, but that would be the only time the visiting team lit the lamp during the game. The Penguins tallied three goals in the second period and due to the lack of defensive pressure, Carey Price was pulled after the fifth Pittsburgh goal. Peter Budaj tried to liven things up by attempting a goalie fight with Marc-Andre Fleury, but the linesmen held them off. Final score: Penguins, 5-1. Next up, the Canadiens headed to Detroit on Friday night for the first time since December 2010 for a road game against the Red Wings. Again only a single goal scorer prevailed for the Habs in this game: Brendan Gallagher, with a power play goal in the second period. It was another woeful tale of poor defense, sloppy offensive formations, bad turnovers and a lack of energy. Final score: Red Wings, 4-1. (Read our full recap here: When Will the Bleeding Stop?)
The next night found the Canadiens back on home ice with an arena full of fans anticipating an exciting matchup against the Washington Capitals. Unfortunately, many of those fans started exiting their seats midway through the third period. An inability to create any scoring chances was highlighted by the fact that the Habs could only muster three shots on goal in the first thirty minutes of gameplay. The Caps, with Alex Ovechkin back in the lineup after injury, lit the lamp four times in the second period alone. Price found himself being replaced by Budaj for the second time this week thanks to the uninspired efforts taking place on the ice in front of him. Final score: Capitals, 5-0. The Canadiens hope to get on the winning side of things with their next game on Tuesday night against the Carolina Hurricanes. With the Canadiens collectively scoring two goals in three games (all losses) this week, none of the skaters deserves consideration as one of the weekly stars.

Although Price’s goals against average and save percentage stats went in the wrong direction this week, it wasn’t for lack of effort. Price was the only Canadiens player who, game in and game out, gave the team a chance to win. He was the lone man performing to his potential.
