A group of students at Cypress Ranch high school in Texas gave the Nazi salute and shouted “Heil Hitler” while their class photo was being taken on Tuesday.

A student who witnessed the incident emailed Houston’s NBC affiliate and provided more context. Following the first picture, about 70 students put their hands in the air, performing what appears to be the offensive salute.

“It was pretty terrifying,” the anonymous student said.

Other students who weren’t involved took photos from afar and began posting them online and even shared them with the local media. The seniors took two photos—one that was intended to be serious, and the other intended to be funny.

“Most people may think it was just kids just joking around but in the current political climate and the fact these kids are seniors in high school, it’s beyond unacceptable,” the student wrote to KPRC.

Cypress Ranch’s principal sent a letter home to parents and advised them to limit sharing of the photo on social media.

“This letter is to make you aware of a situation that occurred on our campus today while our senior class was taking a large group panoramic picture,” he wrote. “Several of our students made the poor choice of displaying inappropriate gestures during this time. Unfortunately, many of these images have been shared on social media. This is extremely disappointing as this is not an accurate representation of our student body.”
