Blake Speers and Colton White both had productive weeks for Sault Ste. Marie. Speers had 3 assists, +4, 4 PIM, 10 shots, and a 71.43 FO% across 3 games. White had a goal, +4, 2 PIM, and 4 shots across 3 games.
Michael McLeod had an assist, even rating, 2 PIM, 6 shots, and 70.83 FO% across 2 games for Mississauga. Nathan Bastian had a goal, +2, 2 PIM, 4 shots, and 42.86 FO% during that stretch.
Evan Cormier nearly helped Saginaw to a perfect week. He made 37 saves on 41 shots in a victory over Flint on Wednesday. He then made 24 saves on 26 shots in a win over Guelph on Friday. The next night he made 23 saves on 27 shots in a loss to Owen Sound that all but crushes their playoff hopes. Saginaw is 6 points behind Sarnia for the final spot, with 3 games left and a game in hand.

Alexander Kerfoot had 2 goals, an assist, even rating, 2 PIM, 3 shots, and a 52.94 FO% as Harvard won their ECAC Quaterfinals series 2-0 over Yale. They will face Quinnipiac in the Semifinals. Kerfoot came in at #98 on SBN College Hockey's Top 100 NHL Prospects. They had this snippet on him from a February report:
A 2012 NHL Draft selection of the New Jersey Devils, he is undersized, but he has above average speed and exceptional vision. He does a good job of creating time and space for his linemates by using his quickness to separate from defenders.
JD Dudek had 2 goals, +1, 6 PIM, and 6 shots as Boston College defeated Vermont 2-0 in their Hockey East Quaterfinals series. They will take on Boston University in the Semifinals.
Brett Seney's season ended last week.
Joey Anderson had 2 assists, +3, 2 PIM, and 7 shots as Minnesota Duluth won their NCHC Quaterfinals series over Miami. They will take on Western Michigan in the Semifinals.
Jeremy Davies had 2 assists, +2, 4 PIM, and a shot as Northeastern's season came to an end after losing both of their Hockey East Quarterfinal games to Boston University. He finishes his freshman season 6th on the team in scoring and 2nd among defensemen. Davies came in at #88 on SBN College Hockey's Top 100 NHL Prospects list. They included this quote from his coach in the post:
“He’s a smart offensive player. He has real good hockey sense,” explained Northeastern coach Jim Madigan. “He’s defending better. He’s defending quickly. He’s come a long way. He and [Chicago Blackhawks prospect] Ryan Shea are playing 20-22 minutes a game. For freshman defensemen, that says something about the confidence and comfort level we have in them.”
Insight Into the Hockey East Prospects
We were fortunate to have Mike Davis, a longtime reader of this blog and someone who follows Hockey East closely, especially Northeastern, reach out to us to provide some insights into the 3 Devils prospects that call Hockey East home. You can check out his blog on Northeastern hockey here. Below in the quoted section is what he had to say on these players. Starting with JD Dudek of Boston College:
From my BC friend who used to be editor of BC Interruption: "Dudek has arguably been BC's most improved player this year. He was always a good skater who played hard. This year he was given a bigger role with more playing time and his scoring increased to go along with it. He's not a finisher but his skating ability has made him a threat. 2nd unit power play. Don't think he plays much on the PK."
Moving on to Brett Seney:
Seney continues to be Merrimack's best player, both in points and presence on the ice. He is lightning fast as a skater, and has a good wrist shot that he gets off quickly. His size is the biggest thing that is an obstacle to him, as he gets knocked off the puck easily, but it's hard to hit what you can't catch, and Seney is good at evading opposing players. One flaw though is penalties- he took 19 penalties this year in 36 games, which is not a very good rate. They were all minors too, which can point to issues with positioning.
Seney is one of those under the radar prospects that has quietly produced on some offensively challenged Merrimack teams. I certainly find this report to be encouraging and hope to see him cut down on the penalties next year as a senior. Merrimack is going to have to rely on him to be the main man once again next year. Moving on to Davies now:
I have seen Davies play in nearly every game for Northeastern this season, and he has been a major contributor from day 1. He plays in the top 4 in the defensive corps, and has a very active stick in the defensive zone. He is not the biggest body, but is strong on the boards and fending off forecheckers. Davies' best asset is his offensive IQ, allowing him to see the ice incredibly well, and join the rush when appropriate. He has 21 points this year (note: now 23), not easy to do as a freshman defenseman in Hockey East. He has scored goals via slap shot, wraparound, and rebounds at the crease; he has score on the powerplay and at even strength as well, so he is not just a one trick pony. In the preseason, Head Coach Jim Madigan said that Davies will remind fans of the way Jim Fahey played- Fahey put up over 40 points his senior year at NU, and was a finalist for the Hobey Baker Award. Davies has a very good shot at making the All-Rookie team for Hockey East this year.
I think it would be fair to say that Davies freshman season was a big success. As Mike noted he came in and contributed from day 1 earning himself an important role in the top 4. His offensive game is certainly something to look forward to and it seems like his defensive game is also coming along nicely. A big thanks to Mike Davis for passing along these insights. Be sure to check out The Northeastern Hockey Blog and give them a follow on twitter.
UDFA Rumors
It's that time of year again, when undrafted college and junior players sign with NHL organizations to further their hockey careers. While a few names have come off the board, we are just starting to get some rumors about what the Devils may be up to. Jeff Cox, a hockey scout and writer for ESPN Boston and SBN College Hockey had this tweet yesterday:
Hearing UNH senior forward Tyler Kelleher is close to signing NHL contract with New Jersey Devils, a team long rumored to be interested.
— Jeff Cox (@JeffCoxSports) March 13, 2017
I'm a fan of signing Kelleher. Everyone's going to talk about his size, understandably, but being able to add a playmaking prospect that has produced at the NCAA level (1.09 Pts/GP) since being a natural freshman is awesome. I've been hoping the Devils would be able to sign him eventually since he attended the 2015 prospect camp. Still a longshot to make it, but at least there is some potential there.
Here's some of what SBN College Hockey had to say on Kelleher recently as one of the top UDFA's out of the NCAA:
When focusing on Kelleher, it doesn't take long to realize what his game is all about. He has a quick stick and is relatively shifty, but he doesn't have elite NHL speed. He's undersized as well. He makes up for that with elite hockey sense. He knows where to be in the offensive zone at all times. He's always one step ahead of the defensemen at this level. He finds seams and he knows where he's going with the puck before he gets it on his stick.
His size is less the reason he's behind Vecchione and Aston-Reese than his play in his own zone. He's struggled for whatever reasons to engage and be a purposeful player when defending.
Strengths: Elite hockey sense, quick stick, makes linemates better
Weaknesses: Lack of size, NHL speed, defensive zone responsibility
TSN's Bob McKenzie tweeted that the Devils are one of the teams interested in defenseman Gavin Bayreuther:
PIT, EDM, VAN, SJ, LA, DET in on one of them (Aston-Reese); BUF, DAL, NJ, COL in on the other (Bayreuther).
— Bob McKenzie (@TSNBobMcKenzie) March 13, 2017
Bayreuther is a guy I've kept tabs on this season since I found him to be one of the more interesting invites to last summer's prospect camp. Offensive producer from the back end (0.78 Pts/GP in his NCAA career) and solid in his own end. He's been one of the top players for St. Lawrence for the past 4 seasons. He also happens to be Ben Lovejoy's cousin so we'll see if that helps the Devils case at all. I hope they can get a deal done. Here's what Last Word on Sports had to say on him recently:
He has an outstanding slap shot, with excellent power and accuracy. He shows the ability to be a power play quarterback with solid puckhandling skill, good vision, and strong passing ability. Bayreuther is also a very good skater showing good speed and the agility to walk the line and open up shooting and passing lanes. He was given offers last year, but opted to return to school. He has added strength which has helped him along the boards and in his own end of the ice. Bayreuther could still use a bit of time in the AHL and to get even stronger though.

Yegor Rykov has helped SKA to a 2-1 series lead in the Western Conference Semifinals of the Gagarin Cup Playoffs. In 3 games last week he had an even rating, 3 shots, and 4 blocks while averaging about 11:45 per game.
Mikhail Maltsev had an even rating, 2 shots, and won 7/15 faceoffs in 14:30 as SKA-Neva won their opening game of their 2nd round series against Rubin Tyumen.
Jesper Bratt helped AIK to the top of the HockeyAllsvenskan Playoff table as they now have 11 points after 4 games in the 5 game round robin group. They have 3 wins and 1 overtime loss, which coupled with their bonus points for their regular season finish put them tied in points with Västerviks IK heading into the final day of group play. Should they win the group, they'll play BIK Karlskoga, who lost the HockeyAllsvenskan Finals to Mora IK, in the Playoff to the SHL qualifiers. Interesting Pro/Rel set up they have in Swedish hockey. Anyways, Bratt has an assist and 6 shots with an average ice time of 10:19 in 4 playoff games.
