Here are some comments and observations from the Hamilton Bulldogs vs. Iowa Wild game at the Coliseum formerly known as Copps on February 6, 2015.

1 A quick look at last night’s line combos and D pairings in the warm up:

The healthy scratches are: Shane Bakker

Injured: Magnus Nygren (concussion, out indefinitely), Darren Dietz (day-to-day), Jack Nevins (upper-body, 4 to 6 weeks) and Connor Crisp (upper-body, day-to-day)

Bulldogs currently with the Habs: Nathan Beaulieu, Christian Thomas, Gabriel Dumont and Jacob de la Rose.

Bulldogs in Wheeling: Frank Palazzese, Morgan Ellis and Bobby Shea.

Players signed to PTOs: Shane Bakker and Sahir Gill.

2 The Bulldogs PP went 0 for 0 bringing their total for the season to 22 goals on 177 chances for a 12.4% success rate. They entered the night in 27th place overall in the league with a 12.4% success. The Bulldogs have also given up just 3 shorthanded goals this season. Note: The Bulldogs had no power play opportunities tonight.

3 Hamilton went 2 for 2 on the PK bringing their total for the season to 23 goals given up on 169 chances for a 86.4% success rate. They entered the game in 7th place overall in the league with a 86.2% success rate. The Bulldogs have scored 2 shorthanded goals. Drewiske, Pateryn, Tinordi and Allen were the most used defenseman, while Tangradi, Dowell, Macenauer and Bowman all saw action up front.

4 Hamilton outshot Iowa 26-25. Charles Hudon led the Bulldogs and all players with 5 shots while Graovac led the Wild with 4 shots (1st period 9-6 Wild, 2nd period 12-6 Wild, 3rd period 14-4 Bulldogs).

5 Quick points:

a) 3,745 fans came out to the game in Hamilton.

b) Hudon had 2 assists, 5 shots and was a +1. Hudon has just 2 goals, 6 assists and is a -3 in his last 18 games played. Hudon still leads all rookie scorers with 38 points just 5 points ahead of Toronto’s Connor Brown.

c) Carr broke a 3 game pointless streak scoring 2 goals on 4 shots and was a +1 for the night. Carr has now scored 5 goals in his last 8 games played.

d) Tangradi picked up an assist tonight giving him 1 goal, 3 assists, 5 shots and a +5 rating since returning from injury 2 games ago.

e) Tinordi scored his 1st goal of the year giving him 1 goal, 3 assists, 5 shots and a + 5 rating in his last 4 games played.

f) Andrighetto had 1 assist, 0 shots and was a -2 on the night. Andrighetto has 1 goal, 2 assists, 6 shots and a -3 rating in his last 4 games played.

g) Bowman’s 3 game point streak came to an end as he finished the game with 0 points, 1 shot and a -2 rating.

h) MacDonald gave up 4 goals on 24 shots, including 2 on just 3 shots in the 3rd. He has given up 7 goals in his last 2 games on just 55 shots giving him a save percentage of just .873.

i) The line of Hudon, Carr and Tangradi had 2 goals, 3 assists, 12 shots and a +4 rating. They took 46% of the total shots on goal Hamilton had tonight. (12 out of 26)

j) Hensick was a team low -3 and had 2 shots on goal.

k) This was the 1st time this season that Hamilton didn’t get a power play opportunity in a game, the season low was 1 against the Rochester Americans a 3-2 win on December 12, 2014.

l) Hamilton picked up just 4 minutes in penalties giving them just 68 penalty minutes in their last 8 games for an average of 8.5 per game. At the 38 game mark of the season the Bulldogs were averaging 19.26 minutes a game, but over the last 8 games they have dropped that average to 17.39 minutes per game.

m) It was the 20th time this season that the Bulldogs have scored the first goal with their record dropping to 13-5-2-0, picking up 28 of a possible 40 points.

n)  It was the 20th time this season that Hamilton scored 3 or more goals in a game giving the a record of 17-2-1-0 scoring 84 while giving up 47.

o) The Bulldogs home record moves to 11-11-3-0 giving them 25 points, scoring 63 goals while giving up 67.

6 A look at the 3 stars of the game:

1st star: Kurtis Gabriel of the Wild with 1 goal, 1 assist, 1 shot and a +1 rating – wouldn’t have been my pick. I would have picked Daniel Carr of the Bulldogs with 2 goals, 4 shots and a +1 rating.

2nd star: Daniel Carr of the Bulldogs with 2 goals, 4 shots and a +1 rating – wouldn’t have been my pick. I would have picked Charles Hudon of the Bulldogs with 2 assists, 5 shots and a +1 rating.

3rd star: Brady Brassart of the Wild with 1 goal, 1 assist, 2 shots and a +1 rating – would have been my pick.

7 Premium player of the game went to Jarred Tinordi of the Bulldogs with 1 goal, 2 shots and an + 1 rating – wouldn’t have been my pick. I would have picked Eric Tangradi with 1 assist, 3 shots and +2 rating .

8 It was the 3rd of 4 games between the two teams this season with the Bulldogs holding a 2-1-0-0 record with 1 games to go in the season series, scoring 10 goals while giving up 9.

9  Hamilton’s six game winning streak comes to an end as they give up three goals on just four shots in the third period dropping a 5-3 decision to the Iowa Wild in front of 3,745 fans at the Coliseum formerly known as Copps.

Daniel Carr would get the Bulldogs on the board first burying a pass from behind the net by Sven Andrighetto at 15:13 of the first period making it 1-0. Eric Tangradi would get the other assist.

Jarred Tinordi would scored his first of the year beating Darcy Kuemper with a shot from the point at 9:48 of the second putting the Bulldogs up 2-0. Charles Hudon would draw the lone assist on the play.

Jonathon Blum would make it a 2-1 game at 11:53 of the second with assists going to Stephane Veilleux and Brett Sutter.

Zach Phillips would tie the game at 17:53 of the second with Stu Bickel and Jason Gregoire getting the assists.

Just under ninety seconds gone in the third period Brady Brassart would beat Joey MacDonald high glove side to put the Wild up 3-2. Kurtis Gabriel and Joe Perry would get credited with the assists.

Daniel Carr would pick up his second goal at 6:19 of the third by tipping in a Charles Hudon centering pass beating Darcy Kuemper to tie the game 3-3. Greg Pateryn would draw the second assist on the play.

With just under ten minutes gone in the third Kurtis Gabriel would beat Joey MacDonald high glove side to put the Wild up 4-3. Stu Bickel and Brady Brassart would grab the helpers.

With the Hamilton net empty Jonathan Blum would score his second of the game putting Iowa up 5-3 with just 59 seconds left in the game to seal the deal. Iowa goalie Darcy Kuemper would get the lone assist.

Joey MacDonald stopped 20 of 24 shots in a losing cause while Darcy Kuemper would stop 23 of 26 to pick up the win. Final score: 5-3 Wild.

Next game for the Bulldogs will be February 6th in Cleveland where they take on the Lake Erie Monsters at Quicken Loans Arena.

10 A few quick observations from the Dog pound:

1st period

First half of the period 2-2 tie on the shot clock and 0-0 on the scoreboard.

Second half of the period 7-4 Wild on the shot clock and 1-0 Bulldogs on the score board.

Hudon had 4 of the 6 Bulldog shots in the period.

Hudon also missed on a breakaway.

Good period by the Bulldogs.

2nd period

First half of the period 5-2 Bulldogs on the shot clock and 1-0 on the scoreboard.

Second half of the period 9-1 Wild on the shot clock and 2-0 on the score board.

Wild were the better team in the period.

Hudon and Carr missed on a 2-on-1 break.

3rd period

First half of the period 9-2 Bulldogs on the shot clock and but 2-1 on the scoreboard for the Wild.

Second half of the period 5-2 Bulldogs on the shot clock and but 1-0 Wild on the scoreboard.

Even though they gave up 3 goals in the period they dominated the shot clock.

MacDonald gave up 2 goals on 3 shots and didn’t make his 1st save until there was less than 3 minutes to go in the period.

Hamilton gave up 3 goals on 4 shots.

Fights

NONE

There were only 2 penalties called in the whole game with both of them going to the Bulldogs.
