The first round of the Ontario Hockey League, Western Hockey League, and Quebec Major Junior Hockey League playoffs have come to a close with the second round set to begin later this week. At the beginning of the playoffs, there were seven prospects of the Montreal Canadiens in the Canadian Hockey League system set to begin their road to the 2015 Memorial Cup in Quebec City. After one round, four prospects will be continuing their campaign into the second round and three prospects are done for the season. Nikita Scherbak (Everett Silvertips – WHL) advance to the second round to meet the Portland Winterhawks. Michael McCarron (Oshawa Generals – OHL) will head to the second round to take on the Niagara IceDogs. Jeremy Grégoire (Baie-Comeau Drakkar – QMJHL) is off to the second round to face the Val-d’Or Foreurs. Last but not least, Zach Fucale (Quebec Remparts – QMJHL) advances to the second round to take on the Charlottetown Islanders. Daniel Audette (Sherbrooke Phoenix – QMJHL), Tim Bozon (Kootenay Ice – WHL), and Brett Lernout (Swift Current Broncos – WHL) all see their road to the 2015 Memorial Cup come to an end. Although as of now, Lernout and Bozon have been assigned to the Hamilton Bulldogs of the American Hockey League.

Nikita Scherbak

Team: Everett Silvertips (WHL)

– Playoff Record: 4-2

Nikita Scherbak and the Everett Silvertips of the Western Hockey League advance to the second round of the playoffs after a triple overtime victory in game six against the Spokane Chiefs.  Scherbak, the regular season leading scorer for the Silvertips finished the first round with three points in six games played. Everett have advanced past the WHL Western Conference Quarterfinal for the first time since the 2006-07 season.

Michael McCarron
Position: Right Wing

Draft: 1st Round (25th Overall) – 2013 NHL Entry Draft

Team: Oshawa Generals (OHL)

– Regular Season Record: 51-11-6 (108 Points)

– Playoff Record: 4-1

The Oshawa Generals, who are ranked #2 in the Ontario Hockey League and #3 in the country in the BMO – Canadian Hockey League top 10 finished off the Peterborough Petes in five games, with many of them shown on Sportsnet. McCarron finished the first round with three points in five games and an average of 2.20 penalty minutes per game. The Generals advance to the second round to take on the Niagara IceDogs for their 6th playoff meeting in their history.

Jeremy Gregoire’s Baie-Comeau Drakkar defeated the Saint John Sea Dogs in the first round of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League playoffs and will advance to the second round. Gregoire continued to be a key piece to the success of the team from the regular season into the playoffs as he led the Drakkar in points through the first round.

After being forced to sit and watch from the bench for the first two games of the best-of-7 series, the Quebec Remparts put their confidence in Habs prospect Zach Fucale to protect the net for the next five. Fucale went 3-2 while allowing 15 goals in 5 games to help the 2015 Memorial Cup hosts advance to the 2nd round of the QMJHL playoffs. The only goaltender in the Habs system in the 2015 CHL playoffs is likely to continue has the starter into the second round.

Tim Bozon’s Kootenay Ice played a solid seven game series against the Calgary Hitmen, but fell short after being severely outshot 35-13 in game 7 – including only 1 shot on goal in the first period in their do or die 6-2 loss to conclude their season. Bozon was one of four players on his team who averaged a point per game or more along with Sam Reinhart, Luke Philip and Jaedon Descheneau. Bozon finished the 2015 WHL playoffs with 9 points in 7 games played for 1.29 points per game, 0.18 points up from his 1.11 point-per-game campaign in the regular season. Tim Bozon has been reassigned by the Montreal Canadiens to their American Hockey League affiliate – Hamilton Bulldogs for the remainder of the season.

Unfortunately for Brett Lernout and his Western Hockey League club, they were unable to win a game against the Regina Pats. Lernout finished the playoffs with one goal. The Pats swept the Swift Current Broncos four games to none, but good news for the 3rd round pick Lernout – the Montreal Canadiens assigned him to their American Hockey League affiliate to make his professional hockey debut with the Hamilton Bulldogs who are fighting for a playoff spot during their final year in Hamilton.

With two goals and four assists for a total of six points, Daniel Audette finished third among Habs prospects in points through the first round of the 2015 Canadian Hockey League playoffs on the road to the memorial cup, and second among prospects specifically in the QMJHL. Audette’s Sherbrooke Phoenix have failed to pass the first round in the playoffs for the third time in their 3-year history in Sherbrooke.
