Driver carjacked in Monterey Park while asking for directions (Pasadena Star-News)
A driver was carjacked in Monterey Park last Thursday on Atlantic Boulevard and 1st Street. The driver pulled over to ask a pedestrian for directions and the pedestrian, along with another suspect, threatened the driver with a gun. The two suspects ordered him to step out of the vehicle and drove off with the car.
South Pasadena Unified may cut 39 employees if parcel tax fails (South Pasadena Patch)
South Pasadena Unified School District must deal with a $2 million deficit if a measure to renew the city's parcel tax fails in the March election. The parcel tax was approved in June 2009 by South Pasadena voters, and if they do not support the renewal, the district faces teacher layoffs, class size increases, and cuts including libraries, arts, music, and academics, according to officials.
Driver arrested in South Pasadena for falling asleep behind the wheel (South Pasadena Patch)
A man was arrested on Huntington Drive and Bushnell Avenue on Dec. 7 after falling asleep while driving. According to police, the 32-year-old Lake Balboa resident fell asleep behind the wheel and parked his car in the street, blocking a traffic lane. He was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence.
Candidates file for city election in Monterey Park (Pasadena Star-News)
Four city positions are up for election in Monterey Park next March. Five candidates have filed papers to run for two available city council seats. Four candidates pulled papers for one city clerk position, but only one had filed by last Tuesday. One challenger is running against the incumbent city treasurer and both have filed their papers.
Burglar swipes coins from laundry machines (South Pasadena Patch)
A burglar broke into three washers and dryers at a South Pasadena apartment complex on the 1600 block of Amberwood Drive. The unidentified male is about 5 feet 10 inches tall, weighs 160 pounds, and was wearing a black jacket, dark black sweatpants, a du rag on his head, and carrying a purple blanket. Metro board member speaks out against 710 tunnel (San Marino Patch)
VIDEO: Glendale City Councilman and Metro Board Member Ara Najarian spoke out last month against the proposed tunnel that would extend the 710 Freeway. Najarian did not receive enough votes to continue on the Metro board, which he said is connected to his opposition of the project.
Jury awards injured Monterey Park officer $2.2 million (Pasadena Star-News)
A Monterey Park police sergeant won $2.23 in court on Thursday after an on-duty injury in 2009 involving an Athens Services truck left him with two fractured wrists and a torn urethra. The truck crashed into Sgt. Scott Wiese's motorcycle after being parked on the wrong side of the street and pulling into traffic lanes.
