Name of Program: Abraham Lincoln Incentive Grants Program from AMIDEAST

Program provides direct assistance to students who would not otherwise consider U.S. study due to the significant preparatory expenses that are involved to become competitive applicants for U.S. college and university admissions and scholarships. Grant covers fees for required college admissions tests, essay-writing and test-preparation courses, visas, and SEVIS. Also includes transportation costs to travel in-country to preparation courses and testing. Application fees at up to six U.S. colleges or universities will be covered.

ASAI programs support undergraduate and graduate students from the Arab world, studying in 14 countries. They include interest-free loans (for Master’s and Ph.D degrees), grants to teachers and doctors in the West Bank and Gaza, and matching funds from the British Council for special medical programs in the West Bank and Gaza. ASAI also offers university placement, counseling, supervision and employment services. Students must plan to work and live in the Arab world upon graduation. Over 100 scholarships are awarded each year. Final decisions are made in early August.

Name of Program: Diana Kamal Scholarship Search Fund from AMIDEAST
Who: Grade 11 and 12 students preparing to apply to a 4-year undergraduate program in the United States

Acceptance based on academic achievement and economic need. Students receive assistance in identifying scholarships and assistance in U.S. institution applications. The fund supports fees associated with testing, institution applications, U.S. visas, and other application and pre-departure expenses. AMIDEAST will provide a full range of services, including academic advising, English-language enrichment, test preparation, testing services, and travel expenses.  AMIDEAST staff works with the grantee and their family to apply to up to four prestigious institutions in the United States, wherein the U.S. institution will provide the scholarship that covers tuition and fees.

Name of Award: Emergency Student Fund (ESF) from the Institute of International Education
Who: Students on U.S. campuses with urgent financial need due to the currency devaluation or emergency situations in their home countries.
What: Grants of up to $2,000 each
When: Upcoming academic semester
Where: United States
Program length: Ongoing
Deadline to apply: Ongoing

International Student Advisers or other campus officials should submit applications to IIE on behalf of students at their institutions who need financial assistance to complete the semester. To nominate students, advisers must complete the ESF nomination form and e-mail it to ESF@iie.org. Applications directly from students will NOT be accepted. Name of Program: The Hope Fund
Who: Open to all Palestinian refugees in Jordan, Lebanon, Gaza and the West Bank.
What: Offers tuition scholarships, transportation, living expenses, health insurance and textbooks
When: Academic year 2015-2016
Where: 28 partner colleges/ universities and three high school boarding schools in the United States
Program length: 4 year undergraduate study and/or completion of high school

The Hope Fund is an effort to improve the quality of life for Palestinians by providing higher-education opportunities in the United States for mature Palestinian students of good character, who are academically qualified but who lack financial resources to provide such an opportunity for themselves.

Name of Program:Onsi Sawiris Scholarship Program
Who: Egyptian undergraduate students in the fields of engineering, economics, political science, finance and management.
What: Full tuition scholarship, living allowance, travel and health insurance

Program length: Four-year undergraduate degree program
Deadline to apply: June 15, 2014

The Onsi Sawiris Scholarship will be awarded to Egyptian nationals who are residing in Egypt (preference will not be given to dual-nationality applicants) and based on character and merit as demonstrated through academic excellence, extracurricular activities and entrepreneurial initiative.

Candidates must be committed to returning to Egypt for two years directly after the successful completion of the degree. Eligibility criteria includes a GPA of 3.5/90 percent in ThanaweyyaAmma (secondary year) or equivalent certificates, IBT TOEFL: 100 or above, SAT I: 2,100 or above

MASTERS/GRADUATE

Name of Program: The Barakat Trust
Who: Funds post-graduate work in Islamic art history, architecture and archaeology
What: Junior graduate scholarship to study toward M.St or M.Phil in Islamic art and archaeology
When: Each academic year
Where:Faculty of Oriental Studies, University of Oxford
Program length: 1 year (second year renewal is possible)
Deadline to apply: Feb. 15

This program is mainly for Muslim students (a few are available for non-Muslims) and open to those who have already been accepted by the Faculty of Oriental Studies to read for an M.St or M.Phil in Islamic art and archaeology at the University of Oxford. The majority of funds available are “zakat” monies, and as such can only be granted to Muslim applicants, to enable them to carry out, in person, particular tasks, projects or courses of study. There are also funds that are available to assist non-Muslim scholars and projects administered by non-Muslim organizations.

What: full tuition and fees for graduate work in a masters degree program at Boston University

Students must receive an unconditional admission to Boston University in order to be considered for this program. The Foundation currently supports 30-35 students. Participants must return home to Lebanon to work after completion of their education. No immigrant students; no dual citizens. In future years, some scholarships may be designated for other specific universities.

DOCTORATE

Name of Award: Andrew Carnegie Centennial Fellowship
Who: Member of the staff of a university situated in the Arab World and working in the social sciences or related discipline.
What: Visiting scholar

Where: Humphrey School of Public Affairs, University of Minnesota, United States
Program length: 1 semester (min. 3 months — max. 6 months)

The ideal candidate is a junior faculty member who has obtained his or her Ph.D. in the past five years, but pre-doctoral candidates and those with more than five years since the Ph.D. will also be considered. The visiting scholars will work closely with Professor Ragui Assaad, Professor James Ron, Professor Sarah Parkinson and other faculty members at the Humphrey School and the University of Minnesota on research relating to youth and gender, human rights, and mobilization in the context of the Arab Spring.

Who: Students from the Kurdistan region in northern Iraq.
What: Scholarship includes full tuition and a maintenance grant of up to £12,600 a year

Projects may be in any discipline of the humanities and social sciences as applied to the study of the Kurds and Kurdistan, including political science, history, geography, sociology, folklore studies, religious studies, anthropology and gender studies. As part of the scholarship, award winners will undertake 80 hours of work for the center per year.
