The University of Akron Dance Company (UADC) will presents the Fall 2016 Dance Concert Nov. 17 through 19 at 7:30 p.m. and Nov. 20 at 2 p.m. on campus at the Paul A. Daum Theatre in Kolbe Hall, 328 Buchtel Commons.

This evening of dance is a collection of individual works and styles by guest choreographer Stephanie Martinez, UA dance faculty Robin Prichard, Tom Smith, Cydney Spohn, Kara Stewart and student choreographer Teresa Catterlin.

Martinez, an award-winning Chicago dance artist, aims to create environments that captivate, connect and move her audiences along a journey guided by the kinetic momentum of her work. Her choreography has been featured in collegiate dance departments across the country, including Point Park University, Columbia College, Northwestern University, Jacksonville University and Virginia Commonwealth University.

She has also created for The National Choreographer’s Initiative and was awarded The Joffrey Ballet’s “Winning Works: Choreographers of Color.” Upcoming commissions include Eugene Ballet, The Big Muddy Dance Company and Charlotte Ballet, as well as Dance Kaleidoscope. Martinez’s work for UADC, titled “In the Grace of Whit,” was made possible with the partnership of The University of Akron dance program, Neos Dance Theatre and Dance Institute at The University of Akron.

Heartbreak and unmet expectations encircles the piece choreographed by Robin Prichard. “Dusting the Knickknacks, Trashing the Chotskys” charts the terrain of a relationship. From meeting, falling in love and arguing, to going separate ways, this dance uses full-bodied partnering and idiosyncratic gestures. “Things Left Unsaid,” choreographed by Kara Stewart, was inspired by a newly released Pink Floyd song, which cuts from a 1970s interview with Roger Roger Waters. Stewart addresses all of the things we don’t (but should) say in life and what affect those unspoken words have on our psyches.

Tickets are $12 for general admission, $10 for seniors, alumni, UA faculty and staff and $6 for students. Reserve tickets by emailing the Ticket Office at Administration.arts@gmail.com or call (330) 972-7895. When reserving tickets be sure to include the name of the reservation, number of tickets and the date of the performance preferred.
