Chuck Jones, president and chief executive officer at FirstEnergy, made the announcement during a press conference held Tuesday. The new sponsor will be part of the Akron Children’s Hospital Akron Marathon Race Series umbrella.

“This is a fitting example of what we are all about here in Akron in terms of collaboration with regards to the nonprofit community, the business community and the overall community,” said Akron Mayor Jeff Fusco, who also spoke at the press event. “An event like this has brought us together.”

The Akron Marathon was co-founded by Jeannine and Steve Marks, who were also in attendance. Steve Marks thanked Children’s Hospital, the City of Akron, and FirstEnergy for their help and contributions. “It’s extremely gratifying to know and understand how the community has embraced the Akron marathon,” he said.

Also t the event, 30 children, dressed in racing yellow T-shirts ran around Cascade Plaza to the sounds of the Barberton Marching band to help celebrate the new partnership.
