With 2013 designated the “European Year of Air,” this year’s Green Week, the largest annual conference on European environmental policy, took on special significance. Later this fall, lawmakers will undertake a comprehensive review of the European Union’s air policy, and at the conference, Camfil -- the world’s leading provider of clean air solutions -- stressed the need to consider the critical role of indoor air.

Participating in a session on indoor air quality on June 5, Myriam Tryjefaczka, Corporate Sustainability Manager at Camfil, talked about the tangible benefits of tackling -- and reducing -- indoor air pollution. As individuals spend 90 percent of their time indoors, and indoor air can be up to 50 times more polluted than the outdoor environment, cleaner air can dramatically boost health and productivity. She also pointed out that high-quality ventilation systems -- designed around sustainable, high efficiency air filters -- can reduce exposure to indoor air pollution.

Ms. Tryjefaczka stressed that as the “European Year of Air” 2013 offered an opportunity to create a better environment for EU citizens -- not only outdoors, but indoors. As such, she called for indoor air quality to be incorporated into the European Commission’s upcoming review of the EU’s air quality strategy.

The session on indoor air quality -- which addressed the main causes of indoor air pollution, the health impact of poor indoor air quality, and possible solutions -- was chaired by Charles Price of the European Commission’s Directorate General for Health and Consumers. Along with Camfil’s participation, it featured several promising research products, including HealthVent, which aims to develop health-based ventilation guidelines for Europe.

As a leading provider of sustainable air filters and clean air solutions, Camfil has been committed to helping customers optimize the quality of their indoor air. Its innovative filters leverage advanced designs and materials -- using fine fiber media instead of the coarse fibers found in traditional filters -- to do a better job removing harmful particles from the air. As the filters maintain their efficiency longer than traditional products, they require less energy and less frequent replacement. That reduces waste, labor, and energy bills. Indeed, Camfil customers are reducing their HVAC energy costs by up to 30 percent.

The battle on air pollution won’t end tomorrow. But by increasing the focus on indoor air quality -- and the huge role it plays in our lives -- we can make great strides in creating a more healthful future.

The world leader in air filtration systems, Camfil provides clean air solutions for hospitals, hotels, office buildings, educational institutions, and pharmaceutical and biotech companies. We provide the tools to achieve sustainability, maintain high air quality, and reduce airborne infections -- all while lowering total cost of ownership.
