2016-10-11

While Florida’s central Atlantic coast bore the full brunt of Hurricane Matthew last week, Biketoberfest 2016 is a go. The area is still recovering from the devastation caused by the hurricane, Daytona Beach News-Journal reporting that as of yesterday 36,000 people in Volusia and Flagler counties are still without power, some stoplights are still out, and residents are still in the process of cleaning up debris. That said, if there’s any area that could use an economic boost right now, it’s Daytona Beach and surrounding areas.

“Yes we are rolling forward, many favorite spots are open for business.  Anyone with advanced reservations should contact their hotel directly for a status update,” stated Janet Kersey, Executive Vice-President and COO, Daytona Regional Chamber of Commerce. Kersey added that as of yesterday, “The part of A1A damaged is in Flagler County – so from the northern end of the loop (High Bridge) to Ponce Inlet is all clear. All main roadways are open.  Some side streets are passible but use caution unless otherwise marked.  Our County has a special web site and call line to check at the following:”

Volusia County Emergency Management:

BEACHES

Volusia County beaches remain closed to vehicular traffic. Staff plans to reopen beaches incrementally in high-usage areas first and then work outward to the remaining areas. Numerous ramps and walkovers are compromised; it will take time to re-establish the traffic areas and replace signs, lifeguard towers and other equipment.

The beaches are open to pedestrians. However, pedestrians should use caution and watch where they are walking. The debris on the beach consists of jagged metal and boards with nails in them.

Lifeguards are flying a double red flag and urge people to not go into the ocean as there may be debris. Trees, metal roof pieces, and other large construction materials floating in the water could cause severe injuries. Additionally, there will be a high threat for rip currents.

Below is information on the status of local hotels as of yesterday, provided by the Daytona Regional Chamber of Commerce.

One casualty of the storm is the Sons of Speed event that American Iron’s Editor-in-Chief Buzz Kanter was going to race in.

“Regrettably, due to the damaging effects from Hurricane Matthew to New Smyrna Speedway and the Daytona Beach area, the Sons of Speed vintage motorcycle races must be rescheduled at new Smyrna Speedway for March 17 & 18, during Daytona Bike Week,” wrote event organizer Billy Lane of Choppers Inc.
