It’s that time of the semester when you have a constant stream of midterms and assignments that need to be completed. Even through all of the stress you still attempt to maintain some degree of a social life while trying desperately to get a few hours of sleep. Then, on top of that, there are all these student clubs and organizations trying to convince you to give up some of your precious time to a cause or a group or an event. By this time you probably already have ‘NO’ stamped across your forehead as you pass by the thousands of involvement posters plaguing your school hallways. Therefore, we’ve decided to make it even easier for you. When someone starts talking to you about the benefits of AIESEC and how we’re enabling youth to become positive, driven, and passionate global leaders, you won’t even need to waste any effort coming up with an excuse because we’ve already done that for you.

8 Reasons NOT to Join AIESEC

AIESEC does not have textbooks. There is no bookstore for you to buy an outrageously priced book from in order to learn about the fundamentals of the organization. Instead you will learn from experiential learning; being given the opportunity to actually learn from your mistakes and gain real experience. There are also no written side notes or appendices to look to for extra help; instead there is a vast support network with continual encouragement from others to guide you. However, sitting at a desk and trying to absorb all of your knowledge from one textbook in a very short amount of time is just how some people prefer to learn.

If you’re someone who would prefer to have a very simple, short and easy to read resume to give to potential employers then you should definitely not join AIESEC. The amount of experiences and opportunities provided in this organization are endless. Opportunities for internships with companies across the world, international volunteer opportunities, and opportunities locally for professional, personal and leadership development are just a few of the many experiences that AIESEC offers. That’s a lot though, right? Who has the space to be able to fit all of that on a resume? Certainly you don’t want to seem like you’re bragging with all of the relevant work experience that you’ve gained while in University.

AIESEC’s network spans over 124 countries and territories, with over 800 local offices in over 2,500 Universities across the world. Currently in the organization there is over 86,000 members and over 1,000,000 alumni. These people all share the same passion and ambition and are all connected by their desire to make a difference in the world which makes creating new relationships a little bit difficult to avoid. This can be extremely intimidating though, so having a strong and reliable support network might not be what you’re looking for.

Thinking about the future can sometimes be scary and talking about it can be even worse, especially when you have no idea what you want to do with the rest of your life. Members of AIESEC don’t have their entire lives figured out, but they do have the tools, resources, and platform to be able to propel themselves in the direction that they desire. Talking openly and sharing your opinions about the future so that you can find the right steps to move forward is greatly encouraged and supported. Who really wants to share their opinions about the future though? I mean, it’s not like we’re going to live in it soon or anything.

AIESEC believes that we need future leaders who are innovative and adaptable to change, because there will always be room for growth and improvement. However you may be thinking that by the time our generation’s youth become leaders, our current leaders will already have created an everlasting stable economy, saved the environment, solved the issues of poverty, and world hunger, saved the endangered animals, and created a perfect world filled with equality and love.

Avoiding that dream career and lifestyle is totally acceptable, and all of your dreams can be fulfilled while you’re sleeping anyways. Not to mention the fact that gaining skills and experience to be able to follow those dreams can be quite difficult and time consuming. Therefore if your opinion is similar to this then you should probably steer clear of AIESEC. Opportunities in AIESEC are so diverse and endless, that gaining various types of skills and learning how to follow your dreams is not only extremely possible, but guaranteed to happen.

You’ve spent the majority of your life just getting accustomed to your own culture that learning about a new one just seems like a waste of time. Who needs to become culturally aware and learn about how to communicate effectively with people who are different than you when your personal bubble is just so nice and easy? AIESEC gives you the opportunity to completely immerse yourself in another culture; working, eating, traveling and living as others do. It’s also an organization that allows you to connect and learn from people all across the world. With all of that you’re pretty much forced to step out of your cultural bubble.

In a world that could use a lot of improvement there is absolutely no way that the actions of one measly person could make any impact. Also, there are definitely no well known examples of individuals who have made a difference by standing up for what they believe in; that would be outrageous. If this is the case then AIESEC must be absolutely crazy, because something this organization strives to teach is that even the littlest of actions can create a ripple effect. The only way we can truly make an impact on the world is to face a problem one step at a time. The attitude that one person cannot make a difference is taking a step in the wrong direction and leading to a world with no positive growth. Although, believing that even your simplest actions can make a difference is probably a lot to ask of someone.

Now you have eight new reasons not to join AIESEC for the next time someone tries to convince you to join this amazing organization. However, just in case these reasons weren’t convincing enough, you can click the button below and find out how to become a part of the world’s largest youth-run organization; but reason would you have to do that?
