Europe and Latin America Expand Their Collaboration for Open Science

infoDOCKET reports that “over a million records of open access publications from Latin America are now discoverable through the OpenAIRE platform. In December 2016, OpenAIRE began harvesting records from LA Referencia, the large regional repository network that aggregates metadata of open access publications. LA Referencia contains over 1.2 million records of open access content from nine countries in Latin America…”

Six Historical Newspapers Added to National Library of Singapore’s NewspaperSG Portal

Also according to infoDOCKET “Singapore’s National Library’s NewspaperSG portal has been given a “historical” boost.

Since last month, six historical newspapers have been added, bringing the total number of digitized titles to 41 – up from just 14 when the portal was launched in 2010…”

Elsevier adds over one million new figures and tables to Geofacets

KnowledgeSpeak reports that “ Elsevier has announced the addition of more than one million new figures and tables to Geofacets, its premier information solution for geoscientists in Oil & Gas companies and academic institutions. The new content includes seismic profiles, stratigraphic columns, well logs, photographs, tabular data and more, and expands the ability for geoscientists to find and use geoscience information and data…”

Gates Foundation research announces open-access mandate, requires recipients to make findings publicly available

KnowledgeSpeak also notes that “Research funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation,… cannot currently be published in several leading journals as these journals do not comply with its open-access policy. The bar is a result of the Gates Foundation’s policy in support of open access and open data, which was first announced in 2014 but came into force at the beginning of 2017…”

According to ALA News “The American Library Association selects “The Underground Railroad,” by Colson Whitehead, published by Doubleday, Penguin Random House LLC, as the winner of the 2017 Andrew Carnegie Medal for Excellence in Fiction, and “Evicted: Poverty and Profit in the American City,” by Matthew Desmond, published by Crown, Penguin Random House LLC, as the winner of the 2017 Andrew Carnegie Medal for Excellence in Nonfiction.

Dartmouth Medal for excellence in reference awarded to “Encyclopedia of Embroidery from the Arab World”

Also according to ALA News “The winner of the 2017 Dartmouth Medal for most outstanding reference work,… is the “Encyclopedia of Embroidery from the Arab World” published by Bloomsbury Academic and edited by Gillian Vogelsang-Eastwood…”

Encyclopaedias now virtually ‘worthless’ as Wikipedia celebrates 16th anniversary

Library Link of the Day is from ABC Perth which notes that while “they were once a huge investment for the family home and a vital part of any school library, … encyclopaedias have now passed into history and can barely be given away.

“Modern, 20th-century encyclopaedias really aren’t worth anything at all now,” rare book dealer Derek McDonnell told ABC Radio Perth. Second-hand book dealers cannot sell them, and even some charity shops now decline them as donations, he said…”
