ARL Infographic Explains Fundamentals and Importance of Fair Use

“Fair use is an important right that provides balance to the copyright system in the US and supports the Constitutional purpose of copyright to “promote the Progress of Science and the useful Arts.” In conjunction with Fair Use Week 2015, ARL has released a new infographic that explains what fair use is, why it is important, and who uses fair use. The infographic also provides several high-profile examples of fair use.

IMLS Announces 30 Finalists for 2015 National Medal for Museum and Library Service Announced

Libraries Are Concerned About the Lack of New e-books in the Kindle Format

According to Good e-Reader “libraries all over the US have expressed concern … that the vast majority of new e-book titles from Overdrive are not available in the Kindle format.  The few books that have been made available are from small presses and not major publishers… ”

David Burleigh Director of Marketing & Communication for Overdrive responded that “almost all of our e-Books are (or will be) compatible with Kindle. We’re aware of delays in availability for some new titles and are working to resolve them as quickly as possible…”

ALA Council Accepts 2015 Master’s Program Standards for Accreditation

In case you missed it, Information Today reports that “the Council of the American Library Association (ALA) approved the adoption of the 2015 Standards for Accreditation of Master’s Programs in Library and Information Studies. These revised standards emphasize planning, assessment, and evaluation to sustain quality, as well as require demonstration of how the evaluation results are applied. Implementation of these standards begins immediately for programs with comprehensive review visits in spring 2017 and later…”

Brill Selects Copyright Clearance Center to Manage Article Charges for Four New Open Access Publications Processing

Brill has chosen the RightsLink® for Open Access platform from Copyright Clearance Center, Inc. (CCC), a global licensing and content solutions organization, to manage Article Processing Charges (APCs) for its recently launched, international Open Access journals: Brill Open Biology; Brill Open Humanities; Brill Open Law; and Brill Open Social Sciences.

Springer partners with CCC to deliver XML content for corporate biomedical text mining

According to KnowledgeSpeak “Springer has partnered with Copyright Clearance Center (CCC) on a new solution enabling corporate life sciences researchers to perform text and data mining (TDM) quickly and easily across publishers. As one of the first publishers to sign onto the service, Springer will offer a significant portion of its full-text article content through the CCC service when launched later this year…”
