For the price of an entire weekend at The Bellagio, you or someone you love could enjoy one full day of addiction treatment at the Las Vegas Recovery Center! If this doesn’t sound like an appealing trade-off to you, I don’t blame you. That is why it’s a bit odd that an alcohol and drug rehab just 20 miles north of Sin City would charge by the day for treatment, making it kind of impossible not to make that comparison. Nevertheless, I am sure they have their reasons—which may or may not have to do with clients skipping out to hit the tables downtown if sobriety isn’t dealing them a hand they like.

But LVRC offers more than close proximity to live entertainment and seafood buffets. The facility’s on-site detox is medically supervised and provides 24/7 care by nurses and qualified staff. It accommodates a wide variety of cases—ranging from basic to complex—with clients kicking everything from opiates and benzodiazepines to marijuana. LVRC is also the only medical detox in Nevada that is fully licensed and equipped for supervised methadone withdrawal.

Another special quality about LVRC is their pain management program, designed and facilitated by Dr. Mel Pohl, the center’s Medical Director, who is also a Clinical Assistant Professor in at the University of Nevada, and co-author of several books on chronic pain management. With pharmaceutical abuse on the rise, it is difficult to monitor if those suffering from such conditions as fibromyalgia and rheumatoid arthritis actually needs the medication—or the amount—that they are taking. The program at LVRC is structured in a way that will help clients get back on track managing their pain in a healthy and functional way.

For a city known for luxury hotels, plush golf courses and pool day clubs, the grounds and living quarters of LVRC falls a bit short of measuring up to the city’s reputation. Although the center’s nearly two acres of land is kept green and pristinely landscaped, with a beautiful backyard garden offering clear views of the Spring Mountains, the décor of the facility itself could best be described as upscale basic—favoring the aesthetics of a well-maintained corporate hotel more than the glitz and glamour some may associate with Las Vegas. But in typical suburban Vegas fashion, everything is new and very utilitarian. Even the center’s website reflects their no frills vibe. The good news is, while you may not feel pampered at LVRC, you will get solid treatment.

Upon arrival, each client is assigned a bedroom to share with a roommate, although it’s not unheard of for people to land their own private room if attendance at the 41-person rehab is low. Daily chores consist of keeping your room clean; everything else is taken care of by the staff, who have been described as well-informed, disciplined and professional.

The food, which is served cafeteria style, has received mixed reviews—some say the cuisine is above average and some say it’s barely edible. A group of former grateful LVRC clients have even banded together and rallied to have improvements made to the program, including the quality of food, saying it was so bad it actually impeded their recovery. That being said, LVRC does allow clients to have sugar—providing dessert after scheduled meals and coffee and soda until noon each day—and water and juice is available 24/7. They also prepare and provide all meals for you, which is more than some other mid-level rehabs offer these days.

The program at LVRC is 12-step based and the daily schedule is jam packed with recovery—starting promptly at 9 am (after breakfast) with one of three group sessions of the day. In between, clients are assigned 12-step work and other recovery-focused writing assignments. There are AA and NA meetings held at the center as well as transportation provided to off-site meetings during the week. As a client of LVRC, you aren’t going to have a lot of down time, which can be a blessing in early sobriety, but when you do, yoga and Pilates are available at a nearby gym. Also, Chi Kung, a Chinese rhythmic-breathing discipline (similar to Tai Chi) and weekly Reiki, acupuncture and massage therapy are offered on campus. On a less active note, some TV is allowed at night and clients can make calls on the house phone if they pre-schedule it with their sponsor. No laptops or cell phones are allowed but there is talk of some very limited Internet access.

So as serious as whatever you did in Vegas staying in Vegas, your alcohol and drug rehab shouldn’t be any different. While not the lap of luxury, the program at LVRC is designed to keep you on track and focused on your recovery goals, not provide you with an over-priced under pampered place to dry out and get a tan. Although you aren’t going to find any staff member doing Elvis impersonations, LVRC is definitely a place you are going to TCB (take care of business).
