Franchot to Spend Day in Charles County, Visiting College, Elementary School and Appliance Store
Comptroller to Tour Schools, Kick Off Shop Maryland Energy Tour
WHO: Comptroller Peter Franchot
WHAT: Comptroller Franchot will begin his day in Charles County today visiting the La Plata campus of the College of Southern Maryland (CSM) to meet with President Dr. Bradley Gottfried and tour the campus. CSM is an open-admission, comprehensive regional community college that fosters academic excellence in Southern Maryland.
The Comptroller then will tour Mary Matula Elementary School to see the need for the addition of five classrooms to support pre-kindergarten and full-day kindergarten programs. The visit is part of the Comptroller’s role as a member of the Board of Public Works, which approves public school construction funding. The total estimated cost of the project is $3.9 million, with the state providing $950,000 during Fiscal Year 2016. Charles County is requesting $517,000 for the project in Fiscal Year 2017.
To promote Shop Maryland Energy tax-free weekend, which runs February 13-15, the Comptroller will visit La Plata TV & Appliance as the first stop on his statewide tour. During the promotional weekend, ENERGY STAR products will be exempt from Maryland’s 6 percent sales tax. La Plata TV & Appliance opened in November 1954 and has continued to grow as a family-owned and operated business for two generations.
