Responsibilities

Provide all immediate assessments, treatment and health care to survivors as needed and requested. Provide follow-up medical care, treatment, and support as needed.

Assist the contracted doctors with conducting medical/forensic examinations as needed and requested by the survivor, and ensure the completing and signing of the medical certificate. Assist with any other medical follow-up that may be required for legal procedures, and help ensure that medical certificates are delivered to the appropriate agencies in a timely manner.

Help refer and support survivors to access additional health care that may not be provided at the Centre, such as family planning services, other medical care, etc.

Provide information and instruction to survivors on the medical treatment regimen that has been prescribed for them, ensuring that they understand the regimen (dose, schedule, etc). In the case of children, ensure that the parents/caregivers understand this regimen.

Through follow up, monitor and help ensure the survivor continues to follow the treatment regimen. These may be done through home visits, to be coordinated with the counsellors.

Support the counsellors in providing health/medical information to survivors as needed and requested, for example the potential health consequences of GBV, and options for assistance. Assist the counsellor in helping the survivor make choices concerning her medical options.

Manage and oversee the centre pharmacy and medical supplies, ensuring that all items are well maintained, stored properly, and are not close to expiring. Ensure that all drugs and supplies that are dispensed for client use are properly documented in the medication ledger.

Submit requests for new supplies in a timely manner, and notify management when any drugs are close to expiring: this includes monthly requests and any specific requests required on occasion. Ensure all supplies and stocks are monitored regularly.

Receive and treat survivors with kindness, respect, compassion, and in a caring manner.

Maintain excellent listening skills and focused attention at all times when with survivors.

Ensure that survivor consent is properly obtained using the appropriate procedures at all times, and respect her decision where she refuses to give consent.

Help ensure that all services provided to survivors at the centre are implemented in line with best practices and quality standards for the provision of support and services to survivors.

Help to monitor of service provision through regular feedback from clients and their families on services provided through feedback sessions, surveys, and other activities.

Help ensure that all medical documentation of clients and services provided is updated, accurate, organized, and well-maintained. This includes all medical reports, examinations, treatment, and other documentation as relevant and required.

Assist the Centre Manager with other financial, logistical, and administrative tasks as requested and required at the centre.

Help the Centre manager to ensure that the centre and its clients are reasonably safe and secure from external harm as feasible, and report incidents/seek assistance where needed.

Skills and Competencies:

Substantial knowledge and/or practical experience in health and medical issues pertaining to sexual assault, domestic violence and sex trafficking response, and in the provision of appropriate care for survivors.

Basic computer skills are helpful (word, excel, email, etc.)

Strong knowledge of sexual assault, domestic violence and sex trafficking issues in the Lagos context, the impacts of violence on survivors, and best practices for providing support to survivors.

Ability to plan in advance and maintain an organized working style, yet able to handle new events and situations effectively as they arise.

Excellent listening and observation skills; ability to create a space of trust, support, respect, and confidentiality with survivors of all ages and backgrounds.

Education and Experience

Bachelors in Nursing and Masters in Advanced Clinical Practice or graduate of a post masters certificate program for nurse practitioners.

At least 3 years’ experience in the direct provision of examinations, treatment, and care services to women and children including survivors of sexual assault, domestic violence, and other forms of gender-based violence.

Experience in working in a community health center is desirable.

Education and Experience

At least 5 years’ post-qualification experience employed as a Counsellor in the direct provision of counselling or psychosocial support services to clients of gender-based violence, or alternatively adults & children in similar circumstances.

Must be knowledgeable of the principles of sound therapeutic practices with victims of sexual abuse/assault, including working with the continuum of sexual abuse/assault services.

Must understand victimization and demonstrate practices sensitive to sexual abuse/assault issues in therapy.

Responsibilities

Providing and coordinating sexual assault prevention education to teens, college students, advocates, and the local community, facilitating prevention efforts at all 6 levels of prevention

Providing and coordinating sexual violence intervention training

Coordinating outreach and awareness-raising activities in the community

Facilitating the Sexual Violence Prevention Advisory Committee

Externally represent the centre as needed and requested, in particular with respect to referral pathways and networks for comprehensive services to survivors. This includes working with such agencies as the Ministry of Health (MOHS), the Police Family Support Unit (FSU); justice and legal personnel, and other agencies relevant to service provision.

Help identify challenges or gaps in the referral pathways and work to address these collectively with the centre as well as other stakeholders.

Assist in maintaining a network of referral agencies, and assist with coordination meetings as required.

Help to identify sources of corporate funding and work with the executive team on strategies to achieve this.

Ensure administrative, financial systems are in place for effective management of the Centre

Provide guidance and oversight to all services provided to survivors and their families at the centre. This includes helping to ensure that best practices are observed in all aspects of service delivery, which includes confidentiality, informed consent, providing relevant information, respecting survivors’ choices, and so forth, and other best practices in responding to survivors

Help to monitor the quality of service provision through regular feedback from clients and their families, staff, visitors, and other stakeholders involved in the centres.

Help coordinate and assist in efforts to build the technical capacity of centre staff by identifying training needs and pursuing opportunities as available and feasible. Help link centre staff with new resources, materials, and techniques to expand their knowledge and skills.

Provide oversight and monitoring of all client and service-related documentation, including intake and assessment forms, referrals, etc.

Support and oversee the input of client/survivor data into the Data Management System (DMS).

Compile and summarize weekly and monthly data, statistics, and related information, and ensure that this information is submitted to the relevant focal people for reporting and analysis.

Provide overall line management of the centre staff.
