The Super Eagles have been handed a major motivational boost for Saturday’s all important World Cup qualifying match against Algeria.
The team has been promised $10,000 for every goal they score that goes unanswered against the Desert Foxes in today’s World Cup qualifier.
This largesse will come courtesy of the Akwa Ibom State Government, as a way of motivating the team to beat their Algerian counterparts.
The Akwa Ibom State Governor, Udom Emmanuel, made this promise to the Super Eagles players when he visited them at the Le Meridien Hotel Camp.
He was in the company of the immediate past governor of the state, Godswill Akpabio, and the chairman of the senate committee on sports, Obinna Ogba.
Nigeria host Algeria at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium today in Uyo in a Group B fixture on matchday 2 of the qualifiers.
The Algerians were held to a 1-1 draw at home on matchday 1 of the qualifiers by Cameroon, and will be desperate not lose in Nigeria; while the Super Eagles began their qualifiers with a perfect result, beating Zambia 2-1 in Ndola last month.
A win for Nigeria will see them firmly hold on to their position on top of the table with six points, while a draw could also still have them on top, depending on the outcome of the Cameroon v Zambia game.
A loss, however, will most likely take them off the top of the table and possibly catapult the Algerians to the summit.
