Kenya has been hard hit by a severe drought, putting the lives of thousands at risk of death from hunger.

The conditions in the East African country prompted President Uhuru Kenyatta to declare drought a national disaster in early February.

China is doing its part to assist people who are food insecure in the country.

The Kenya China Chamber of Commerce led by the Chinese embassy in Kenya donated food to residents of the drought-hit Makueni County located in the eastern region.

Makueni has suffered failed crops due to the drought that has led to a biting food shortage.

During the event, Chinese officials promised to mobilize more funds to help the affected communities.

“My embassy will be mobilizing the Chinese community here to do more donations to other regions of Kenya which have been affected by drought. This is just a small step. We are working to do more in the coming weeks and in the coming months,” said Yao Ming, Counselor at the Chinese Embassy in Kenya.

The United Nations has already warned that the number of people facing hunger could continue to rise if similar efforts are not conducted.
