2014-06-12

It’s a magical event that happens only once every four years, but when it does you had better have your table picked out, and your beer selection a-plenty. When you are out with your friends watching your nation fight for their star on the jersey, you will need a good beer to accompany the match. The unfortunate truth is that it may be a short season for some. But for others, here is our Foodie list of the top 5 beer and footie hangouts in Hong Kong, so that if you last the full four weeks, you’ll need the biggest selection of brew that you can find.

Given the 11-hour time difference between Brazil and Hong Kong, most of the games will be shown in the middle of the night. Please call your choice of hangout beforehand to double check the screening schedules. (And please note – we cannot be held responsible if you show up for work a little jaded over the next month).

Enjoy and good luck!

The Globe

Always a crowd pleaser and a favourite among the Foodie Team (largely due to their delicious pies), this Soho British pub will be screening a selection of live midnight games as well as replays the following day. As well as their gastropub-ilicious menu, they carry a giant book of beers, from the big guys to the microbrews. Despite being fairly regular customers, we can still only boast tasting just over 5% of the beers on the menu. With TV’s scattered around the bar area and the staff willing to change the channel, this will be where you find the Foodie team (or at least the men in our team).
45-53 Graham St, Central, 2543 1941

de België

A relative newcomer to the beer scene in the past year, de België boasts a large selection of Belgian beers (almost exclusively) and has a new and unique beer on draft each month. They will be screening a selection of games on TVs around their bar area as well as on big screens in their ‘game room’. Behind the casual sizeable bar in the front, you’ll also find a candle-lit, romantic dining area complete with red-checked tablecloths serving homely Belgian cuisine. Are you thinking what we’re thinking? (Two birds one stone…a lovely dinner with the Mrs followed by a footie and beer fuelled night?)

Happy Valley Bar & Grill

Looking to get away from the craziness of central? Happy Valley Bar & Grill serve a large selection of microbrews, and will be screening a few of the 6am games. The beer menu here focuses on USA and UK microbrews mostly, but the big difference is that there is ample outdoor space. This may be one of the few places in HK  that will be open for the early morning games, so please double check beforehand - otherwise you may just end up at the 711 nearby.

Dicken’s Bar

Hiding below the Excelsior hotel in Causeway Bay, Dicken’s Bar is a cozy retreat away from the street noise and bright lights. There are over 80 beers to choose from here, so you can keep coming back (and booking online) until you finish them all.  Since you are in the neighbourhood of Victoria Park, you can easily grab a late or early game on the TV as well as play a game or two in the park. Double awesome?

Hong Kong Brew House

Another in the El Grande group, Hong Kong Brew House boasts a large selection of brews and allows you to throw peanut shells on the ground. You will be situated in the heart of Lan Kwai Fong, which as we all know is a great spot to end up. Check it out!

We’re sure there are more super cool hangouts, so please use the comments below to tell us where you will be celebrating or watching your country play their hearts out for the world cup!
