Rwanda is the leading gorilla trekking destination in the whole world attracting the highest number of tourists from different countries. This East African country is blessed with these rear apes and it offers the best atmosphere for viewing the primates in their natural habitats of Volcanoes National Park. However many travelers before making their safaris to this country ask a lot of questions like the one posed above.
Knowing the toughest and easy to track gorilla family is one of the frequently asked questions by most visitors interested in gorillas tracking. However the question is somehow difficult to answer as it involves so many variables. The steps to see these endanger apes can be categorized in two phases and these steps are a must-to-be followed by everyone who wishes to meet these apes in their natural habitat either in Rwanda or Uganda gorilla national parks.
The first step is to hike from the closest car park to the forest and national park boundary; the distance covered is about 30-60 minutes to the forest boundary. The second step is to hike into the forest to begin the search of our close relatives deep into the forest escorted by the ranger guide, this at times have been decided in advance by trackers at the time they reach the forest verge. The 1st step is very easy to forecast, and usually fairly flat and easy unless you are going to track the Susa -A group the most known as toughest to trek Rwanda gorilla family, this gorilla family involves longer and steeper climb.
The2nd part involves real search of the apes. They are very difficult to predict since meeting them depends on where they spent their last night from, group location, the thickness of the forest and the rain which makes paths muddy with slippery grounds making the hike more difficult. The toughness of the hike for gorilla tracking can also be determined by age and physical fitness levels of a tracker. Usually fit people under the age of 45 years rarely feel any significant stress compared to older trackers who find the trek quiet challenging.
The sabinyo gorilla family is the most straight forward gorilla family and known as Rwanda’s easy to track group which takes 2-3 hours for visitors to encounter the primates. Kwitonda, Hirwa and group 13 are also sometimes easy to track just like the sabinyo group. Nobody in Rwanda can determine which gorilla group to track in advance, its only guides at Kinigi park headquarters who do make a sensible attempt to match individuals to the most suitable group, most especially if they asked to.
Once you prepare your gorilla tracking safari to Rwanda don’t forget to come with sturdy pairs of walking shoes/boots, water proof jackets, walking sticks is usually provided by guides to support you during the walks in the forest especially on slippery mountain trails, porters are readily available for hire at the park headquarters to carry your luggage during the hike.
