Have you ever thought about the phrase “I am fearfully and wonderfully made?”

I do from time to time.  It intrigues me.

Because I do not always feel that way.  Especially when I was in junior high.  You know that awkward stage when you’re all elbows and knees, and some kids are suddenly turning into young women, and others are still kids.

My daughter is fast approaching puberty, and all that it entails.  So, this has been on my mind more.

In context, this is a Psalm of David, and it vacillates between him sounding like he doesn’t want to be seen (maybe he’s committed a sin), and taking great comfort in knowing God knows all of him, all he is going to do, and all he has done.

I’ll admit I feel like that sometimes too.

But, I don’t want my daughter to feel like I did in junior high, I want her to know from her young age of 9, that she is fearfully and wonderfully made.  That God knitted her together in my womb, and that she is precious to Him.

She has inklings of that, but as we approach these years of puberty that is one of my big goals.

But how will I show she is fearfully and wonderfully made?

I’ve got a few things planned for right now.

First, I’m going to be reading Wonderfully Made* to her, it shows how God was involved in her creation from birth, and besides it’s a topic she’s somewhat fascinated with, how babies grow in their Mommy’s tummy.  Sometimes for me learning the how and the why things happen helps me to understand more.

We are completing a mother/daughter Bible study right now as a bit of family discipleship (well mother/daughter discipleship).  I want her to know she is worth my spending time with and putting other things aside, some of my fondest memories from junior high are cuddling with my Mom and talking with her about the hardships of being {fill in the age}.

I am also planning special mother/daughter dates once every few months (I’m also planning special events with my boys).  One is coming up in a few weeks called Secret Keeper Girl, we are going with friends, and I’ll be curious to see how she responds.

All of these are designed for her to see she is fearfully and wonderfully made by God to be her.  She doesn’t need to be someone else (I spent much of elementary school being quite upset I was shorter than my best friend).  She doesn’t need to change her personality (like I wanted to at times in junior high), or her interests.  She can be her, a daughter of the King, and chosen from Creation.
