THE WALKING DEAD (AMC)*
The song: Kiev, “Be Gone Dull Cage”
The episode: “Slabtown” (504)
The hook: TWD uses music sparingly, making the inclusion of a song all the more effective. Case in point, Beth’s (Emily Kinney) eerie walking tour of repurposed hospital/zombie fortress of indentured servitude Grady Memorial on Nov. 2.

GREY’S ANATOMY (ABC)
The song: Ella Eyre, “Home”
The episode: “Can We Start Again, Please?” (1107)
The hook: Backed by Eyre’s textured, soulful voice, Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) made amends with half-sister Maggie (Kelly McCreary) on Thursday in the most Grey’s-y way—communal drinking and gossiping with fellow lonelyhearts Alex (Justin Chambers) and Callie (Sara Ramirez).

SELFIE (ABC)*
The song: Mapei, “Baby It’s You”

SCANDAL (ABC)
The song: Michael Jackson, “Workin’ Day and Night”
The episode: “The Last Supper” (408)
The hook: Work takes many forms, but it’s best handled with the help of some kickin’ tunes. Liv (Kerry Washington), Quinn (Katie Lowes), and Huck (Guillermo Díaz) summoned the King of Pop Thursday as they sniffed out their RNC nemesis Elizabeth “Lizzie Bear” North (Portia de Rossi). On Nov. 6, Chaka Khan’s “I’m Every Woman” set the pace as OPA worked tirelessly to make over schlumpy congressional candidate Susan Ross (Artemis Pebdani).

SLEEPY HOLLOW (Fox)
The song: Cash Cash feat. Bebe Rexha, “Take Me Home”
The episode: “Heartless” (208)
The hook: Despite its Revolutionary-era origins, Sleepy Hollow went ultra-modern with a few electronic dance tracks on Monday. “Take Me Home” turned out to be an unfortunately on-the-nose title for one poor schlub, who hoped for a little vehicular hanky panky and instead found himself in the grips of a succubus. Later, Ichabod (Tom Mison) regretted not bringing ear plugs when he heard Luke Bond and Roxanne Emery’s “On Fire” while returning to the club with Hawley (Matt Bar) in search of said succubus.

THE VAMPIRE DIARIES (The CW)*
The song: Christina Novelli, “Concrete Angel (Acoustic)”
The episode: “Do You Remember the First Time?” (607)
The hook: Suffice it to say it’s been a fraught couple of weeks for the Salvatore brothers and their ladies. Caroline (Candice Accola) and Stefan (Paul Wesley) found their own love-hate themes with Jamie Scott’s “Unbreakable” on Nov. 6 and Novelli’s enduring-yet-brittle tune this Thursday. Elsewhere, Delena grievers were treated to a bittersweet (and soaking-wet) flashback kiss scored to Tom Odell’s “Another Love,” which Jukebox showcased last spring.

THE BLACKLIST (NBC)
The song: Other Lives, “Great Sky”
The episode: “The Decembrist” (208)
The hook: The Oklahoman indie rockers’ Ryan Adams-esque strummer-and-plunker played through Monday’s midseason finale meetup between Red (James Spader) and Tom (Ryan Eggold) that revealed there’s much more to their relationship than anyone could have imagined and served as the first indication that Liz’s (Megan Boone) decision to spare Tom’s life is going to cause her problems. On Nov. 3, “Bleeding Muddy Water” by Mark Lanegan Band underscored a set of contentious scenes between Red and Berlin (Peter Stormare), Ressler (Diego Klattenhoff) and his addiction.

The song: Fujiya & Miyagi, “Vagaries of Fashion”
The episode: “He Deserved to Die” (107)
The hook: Sex and death are always a potent pair. Witness the Nov. 6 autopsy of Lila Stangard intercut with a Rebecca (Katie Findlay) seducing in-over-his-head Wes (Alfred Enoch). Elsewhere, Avid Dancer’s “All the Other Girls” underscored yet more canoodling—this is a Shonda Rhimes-produced show!—between Laurel (Karla Souza) and Frank (Charlie Weber) as Lila’s report was released.

AMERICAN HORROR STORY: FREAK SHOW (FX)
The song: David Bowie, “Fame”
The episode: “Pink Cupcakes” (405)
The hook: We’ve known since Freak Show‘s premiere that Elsa (Jessica Lange) loves a little Ziggy Stardust, so it’s no surprise that the glam rocker’s 1975 earworm is her go-to pump-up music. Such was the case on Nov. 5 as the grande dame of the carnies prepped for a photo shoot she hoped would make her a household name.

ABOUT A BOY (NBC)
The song: Sex Pistols, “Anarchy In the U.K.”
The episode: “About a Bad Girl” (204)
The hook: Because, like Marcus (Benjamin Stockham) on Nov. 4, wouldn’t the tween version of you also have fallen on the sword for the kind of badass chick who appreciates Sid Vicious?
THE GOOD WIFE (CBS)
The song: Eels, “Bombs Away”
The episode: “Message Discipline” (607)
The hook: The Cali alt rockers’ taut track closed out Wife‘s Nov. 2 ep as Alicia (Julianna Margulies) had an office standoff with her new State’s Attorney opponent Frank Prady (David Hyde Pierce).

The episode: “The Secret Origin of Felicity Smoak” (305)

DEGRASSI (TeenNick)
The song: Cajsa Siik, “Birds”
The episode: “Smells Like Teen Spirit” (1401)
The hook: The Torontonian teen series returned Nov. 2 with some major news—Claire (Aislinn Paul) is pregnant. With her aching piano melody, Stockholm’s Siik conveyed the conflict Claire felt while telling baby daddy Drew (Luke Bilyk) she wouldn’t keep the baby… or would she?
REVENGE (ABC)*
The song: Angus and Julia Stone, “Death Defying Acts”
The episode: “Damage” (406)
The hook: Times were a-changin’ for Charlotte (Krista B. Allen) on Nov. 2, so it only seemed appropriate that her trip to rehab was accompanied by Revenge‘s favorite sibling singer-songwriters. Their “For You” also played during a flashback—as well as the pilot and the first-ever TV Jukebox. (Bonus: The Stones’ “Get Home” also underscored a moment of teen jealousy on the Nov. 5 ep of Red Band Society.)

STALKER (CBS)*
The song: Wrongchilde, “Love Is a Battlefield”
The episode: “Love Is a Battlefield” (106)
The hook: Another week, another one of Stalker’s trademark creepily downtempo ’80s cover. No surprise there was plenty of love on Twitter for Mat Devine’s cover of Pat Benatar’s 1983 hit from the procedural’s Nov. 5 installment.
SUPERNATURAL (The CW)*
The song: Gordon Lightfoot, “Sundown”
The episode: “Fan Fiction” (1005)

HAWAII FIVE-0 (CBS)*
The song: Five for Fighting, “All for One”
The episode: “Ina Paha (If Perhaps)” (507)
The hook: How did the 100th episode’s fan-pleasing flashback montage on Nov. 7 come to pass? Five for Fighting frontman John Ondrasik wrote it specifically for the show. “Peter [Lenkov, Five-0‘s Executive Producer] pitched me,” the singer explained. “He wanted a song that reflected the, as he would say, ‘ohana’ vibe of his show—the family vibe. And I thought I could do that. I sat down at the piano and wrote a song that talked about the relationship these characters had formed.”
