I’ve always loved getting conversation heart candies around Valentine’s Day! And it’s been interesting watching the messages on them change with time. Candies that used to say “Email Me” and “Fax me” now say “Tweet Me” and “Text Me”! But one thing hasn’t changed, how delicious those little candy hearts are! This year, I wanted to combine my love for conversation hearts and my love for Rice Krispies and created these cute Valentine’s Day Rice Krispie Hearts!
Did you know that conversation heart candies have been around since 1866? They were even mentioned in the Anne of Green Gables book, which came out in 1908! That’s over 100 years of cute messages on heart candy! I wonder what we’ll be writing on them on their 200th anniversary in 2066?
Valentine’s Day Rice Krispie Hearts
Ingredients
10 oz bag miniature marshmallows
3 tablespoons softened butter
6 cups Rice Krispies cereal
16 oz creamy vanilla frosting
Yellow, pink, and purple food coloring
4 decorating bags or sandwich bags
Heart cookie cutter
Directions
1. Grease a 9″ x 13″ baking pan with a non-stick cooking spray.
2. In a large microwave-safe mixing bowl, combine your marshmallows and butter, heat for 60 seconds in the microwave, then mix well.
3. Add your Rice Krispies cereal to your marshmallows and mix until the cereal is evenly coated
4. Press your Rice Krispies into your baking pan (I used a potato masher and it worked great!).
5. Freeze for 15 minutes.
6. While freezing, separate your frosting into four bowls. Leave one bowl plain, in the second bowl mix in a small drop of yellow food coloring, in the third bowl add pink coloring, and in the fourth bowl add purple food coloring. In the end you will have 4 different colored icings. Scoop each one into a different decorating bag. If you don’t have decorating bags, put them in a sandwich bag.
7. Use your heart cookie cutter to cut out your hearts.
8. Cut a small tip off each decorating bag (or a bottom corner off each sandwich bag), and using one color at a time, draw a heart outline onto your Rice Krispies. Fill in each heart, then spread the icing evenly over the surface of the hearts with a knife.
9. Using your white bag, write little sayings onto each heart like TXT ME, LUV, CALL ME, etc. just like conversation hearts!
Then enjoy your fun Valentine’s Day Rice Krispie hearts, or share them with a loved one!
What do you think would make a cute message to put on a conversation heart?
