When I first moved to Connecticut everyone was raving to me about the new Matilde Renacer cigar. At first I didn’t put two and two together, but after some research I saw this was the newest cigar from Jose Seijas.
According to his website, “I am passionate about smoking cigars and have dedicated 40 years of my life to the cigar industry. I am now tapping my deep roots in the Domincan Republic to revive a forgotten brand called Matilde.
Tabacalera la Matilde is a unique boutique cigar factory where I am free to make cigars in my own way. I lead a small team focused exclusively on bringing you the best cigar experience in the world. Matilde is the satisfaction of my life’s dream. It is my great pleasure to share it with you.”

Appearance & Construction: At first glance everything about the band reminds me of the Avo 787. The colors, the shape, the paper, etc. But you know what they say right? Imitation is the best form of flattery. While the cigar is called a robusto, the 54 ring is not traditional and I wish it was. The wrapper is loaded with oils and a nice amount of tooth. In the hand, the cigar is heavy with a firm feel and a well packed foot. Under closer inspection the wrapper has a lot of veins but they are fine enough where they don’t take away from the beauty of the cigar.
Flavor & Notes: The cold draw of the Matilde Renacer reminds me of raisins and there is the slightest hint of molasses. The nose off the foot of the cigar serves up heavy doses of molasses with some black pepper that causes me to sneeze. At first light the cigar has some wood notes and pepper through the nose.
As we work into the first third of the cigar the dominant note is earth. There is a grassy taste to the cigar, with a distinct coffee flavor on the finish. At first it tasted creamy like a light coffee, but it quickly developed into a dark bitter coffee note.
The second third picks up some sweetness similar to the molasses experienced on the cold draw but the finish remains a dominant, albeit less bitter coffee note. The aroma of the cigar is so warm and enticing, it just pulls you deeper into the experience.
The cigar begins to take on a subtle dryness which is common for an Ecuador wrapper. It seems to be a trend in the industry to use this wrapper and while the dryness bothers me at times, one cannot deny the flavor that comes from this particular leaf . The coffee remains on the last third with some wood notes and a bit of earthiness but the aroma really stands out.
Smoking Characteristics: I had a hard time getting this cigar lit, the wrapper is little thick and it took about a half inch for it to begin to burn on one side but I will attribute that to user error. There were a few time in the middle of the cigar where I was worried I would need to retouch it up, but it corrected itself each time. The cigar has a heavy draw, and while it might be too much for some it worked for this cigar. The ash was solid with a nice color.
Conclusion: This might be the best Dominican cigar I have ever smoked and is a winner of epic proportions. The Matilde Renacer is a full body Dominican cigar that stands out. It’s enjoyable flavor profile and enticing aroma compliment the full bodied, full strength smoke.
