99 Problems but a bitch ain’t one is the hook form a song released by Jay-Z in 2004. Back in April Asylum, headed by Tom Lazuka released a lancero by the name of 99 problems.

According to Asylum website, Asylum 13 cigars are true Nicaraguan Puros. A dark Nicaraguan Habana wrapper coats a combination of aged Cuban seed long filler grown throughout the black volcanic soils of Nicaragua. One can expect a slow, cool burn with a medium to full bodied array of flavor. these cigars are eventful throughout and something you don’t want to miss out on.

Cigar: Asylum 13
Size: 99 Problems (7 x 38; Lancero)
Wrapper: Nicaragua Habano
Binder: Nicaragua
Filler: Nicaragua
Strength: Medium-Full
Number Smoked: 5

Appearance & Construction: The wrapper on the Asylum 99 Problems has a nice rustic look to it and is a dark brown in color with some thin veins visible on the wrapper which has a seamless roll. The simple Asylum 13 band which is adorned with skulls sits on this cigar with a small pigtail cap and spongy foot.

Flavor & Notes: The cold draw of the 99 Problems has a rich sweetness to it with a bit of orange peel note to it while the foot of the cigar has a tinge of mocha. On the first light there is some pepper and earth.

In the first third of the cigar some wood begins to develop that reminds me a bit of hickory. which is the base note over some leather notes and some coffee. On the retrohale of the pepper still exists that has a bit of a bite. Every now and then I get a charred meat like note, similar to something that has been left on a BBQ for too long.

The second third of the cigar it develops some more of the charred meat, with some strengthening of the leather note while the hickory note has left the building, and the pepper through the nose remains.

In the last third of the cigar it the hickory returns with  vengeance, that is incredibly tasty with some continued pepper and a some coffee on the short finish.

Smoking Characteristics: When I performed my pre-light draw I was a bit worried about it being too loose, but thankfully once the cigar was lit the draw was perfect. Despite bumping the ash into my camera just after I lit up, the ash holds firm for a lancero. It has a dirty gray color to it. The burn of the cigar was razor sharp and the carbon line was ultra thin. Like most lancero cigars it did not

Conclusion: 99 problems, but this lancero ain’t one! This full bodied lancero cigar is full of flavor as well. This would be a good cigar to enjoy at a summer BBQ or with a nice smokey single malt scotch. Limited to 500 boxes these will be hard to find. but will be worth the effort of tracking them down.

Price: $7.00
Score: 91
