TUBUS shock absorbers can offer a kind of ‘insurance policy’ for electric actuators against the risk of damage due to operator error.

Although electric actuators can be programmed to stop at a particular position with good levels of precision, including controlled acceleration, deceleration and maximum forces exerted, they are still not foolproof.

In particular, operator error can lead to them being programmed to crash, particularly if they are instructed to move at full speed past the physical end stop.

When this is allowed to occur without any additional safeguards, it can be catastrophic for the component, potentially leading to the total destruction of the electric actuator itself.

And while it may sound like an unlikely occurrence, it can actually be quite common during the initial setup phase, when the final parameters are not yet known, and during troubleshooting when measurements might change.

TUBUS shock absorbers provide a physical element of motion control, to act as emergency shock systems when the actuator is instructed to reach its end stop at high speed.

Even a basic rubber buffer can absorb as much as around two thirds of the excess energy from the motion, vastly reducing the risk of damage to the actuator.

Thanks to their simple design, TUBUS dampers do not add to the complexity of the system – they absorb the impact without introducing new moving parts, active motion control or electronics.

As such, they can be installed into systems where hydraulic fluids, oils and compressed air cannot be used, without raising the risk of contamination.

TUBUS dampers and rubber buffers are low-maintenance over an extended period of time, without losing any of their ability to absorb an impact at the same high speeds and high forces.

This makes them an ideal option for systems where the human operator will not necessarily carry out regular inspections and repair work – helping them to act as a real-world ‘insurance policy’ against a lack of vigilance or a miscalculation.
