ACE shock absorbers allowed one manufacturer of plastic films to protect their rolling equipment against breakages due to the high forces exerted on the machinery’s braking system.
Manufacturing large quantities of plastic film on rolls requires equipment that can rapidly roll the film and neatly cut it at the required length – but the faster the process is, the more kinetic energy is involved, and the greater the forces exerted on the moving parts.
Effective motion control systems help to absorb this energy during braking, so that the peak forces applied to the moving parts are not so great, and the risk of damage is reduced.
In this instance, the plastic film manufacturer was dealing with a problem where the excess forces applied to the machinery’s braking system were causing rodless cylinder pistons in the rolling equipment to break away from their carriage.
To reduce the forces and ensure the pistons were not damaged in this way, ACE shock absorbers were fitted at both ends of the stroke, adding effective motion control during the stages where deceleration was at its greatest.
Multiple benefits were achieved in this way, not only including the elimination of the primary problem, as the reduced forces applied to the pistons meant they no longer broke out of their intended positions.
On top of this, operating noise levels were reduced, and vibration levels throughout the machinery were reduced, leading to less stress being applied to the equipment in general.
The reliability of the system was increased as desired, but it was also able to operate at higher speeds, meaning peak output of rolled plastic film was increased by the addition of ACE motion control components.
