Now in its 40th year, the Hong Kong International Film Festival presents not only Chinese language cinema, but also films produced in more than 50 countries around the world with more than 280 screenings over a two-week period.
The 44th Annual Hong Kong Arts Festival (19 February – 20 March 2016) might be winding down, but Hong Kong culture vultures can take comfort in the fact that more cultural activities are on the way.
The very day after the curtain falls on the last scheduled HKAF performance, the house lights will dim at more than 10 cultural venues across Hong Kong.
The 40th annual Hong Kong International Film Festival will present gala premieres, awards presentations, master classes, and restored classics, including four films starring Bruce Lee.
There will be feature length films, short films, documentaries, and everything in between.
In addition to movies produced in China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan will be French cinema, films from Latin America, films from the Middle East, and, of course, movies from Korea and Japan – always favourites with Hong Kong audiences.
Along with films from many other parts of the world …
The festival has a loyal and enthusiastic following, which demonstrates that there is an audience in Hong Kong for more than kung fu flicks and Hollywood blockbusters.

My top pick for the 40th Annual Hong Kong Arts Festival is “Chongqing Hot Pot”, which will premiere on 21 March 2016 at the Hong Kong Cultural Centre in Kowloon’s Tsim Sha Tsui district.
Chongqing Hot Pot is about three high school students who decide to open a hot pot restaurant and find themselves in some "wild and unexpected adventures" after their business venture fails, the film's promoters promise.
The film is Chinese Director Yang Qing’s second flick. His first movie was “One Night in a Supermarket”. The cast includes Chen Kun and Bai Baihe, two of China’s leading actors.
My only concern about watching this movie was dialect. I once had a masseur from Sichuan, and I had a very difficult time understanding him,
If the sound track were in Sichuanese, I thought I’d give the film a pass. I watched the trailer, however, and cast were speaking standard Mandarin.
Hong Kong Film Festival 101
Founded in 1976, the 40th annual Hong Kong International Film Festival (HKIFF) will be held from 21 March to 4 April 2016.
More than 280 films from about 50 countries will be shown. An audience of about 600,000 movie buffs is expected to attend.
