Granted these movies were released in 2014, but till date they are some of the best recently released movies from the Nollywood movie industry. Did you by any means miss any of these?

1. Half of a Yellow Sun

Critically acclaimed screen adaptation of Chimamanda Adichie’s novel of same name was brought to life through a mix of Nigerian and foreign movie stars, and broke the weekend box office record in Nigeria by showing in 15 cinemas in Nigeria for three days.

The story centers on the life of Olanna and Kainene, both young aristocratic Nigerians who return back to Nigeria in the newly independent 1960s. Olanna shocks her entire family when she decided to abandon a very promising future to go and live with her lover, the outspoken revolutionary professor Odenigbo at Nsukka.

Politics, tragedy, love and betrayal is the undertone of this wonderful movie.

2. Being Mrs. Elliott

One would wonder why Omoni Oboli’s ‘Being Mrs Elliott’ was the only 2014 movie to have presidential screening and also premiered at the Nollywood Week Film Festival in France. But take two women, and twist their fates and make their world collide in ways that shake the very foundations of love, life and everything that makes us whole, then you’ll understand. Just don’t get lost in the maze of lust, pain, deception, jealously, drama and intrigue as you follow the story of these women.

Cast: Majid Michael, Omoni Oboli, Ayo Makun, Sylvia Oluchy, Seun Akindele, Uru Eke, Lepacious Bose.

3. October 1



Scene fades in. It’s September 1960 and Nigeria is on the cusp of gaining independence from its British colonial masters. But when strange murders of young females starts happening in the trading post town of Akote in the Western Region of Nigeria, Detective Dan Waziri is deployed to investigate the serial killings and race against time – October 1 – and the story continues.

This movie is bound to hold you spellbound for its entire viewing time. No scene is lost or wasted, and every action is followed up with a decision.

October 1 cost over N200million to produce, and one can say that Kunle Afolayan did not go wrong with this one. In one swoop he has raised the bar with amazing screenplay, plot and directing.

4. Invasion 1897

This historical epic movie is based on the famous Oba Ovoramwen Nogbaisi (1888 – 1897). It details the British Punitive expedition in 1897, slavery and looting of artefacts. This Lancelot Imaseun-produced movie was endorsed by the Oba of Benin Omo N’Oba and won the Best Feature Film (Nigeria) at the Abuja International Film Festival 2014. It was also nominated for the ‘Best Movie of The Year” category for the 2015 AMVCA.

5. Render To Caesar



How do you catch a kingpin with many disguises? This is the problem two friends face in this action movie written, directed and produced by Desmond Ovbiagele.

The movie won the ‘Best Original Screenplay” and ‘Best Actor in Supporting Role” at the 2014 Nollywood Movies Awards.

Cast: Wale Ojo, Gbenga Akinnagbe, Omoni Oboli, Bimbo Manuel, Femi Jacobs, Onyekachi Ejim, Dede Mabiaku, Kalu Ikeagwu, Chris Iheuwa, Kehinde Bankole, KC Ejelonu, Steve Onu, MC Abbey and Yvonne Ekwere.

6. Knocking on Heaven’s Door

One thing always distinguishes Emem Isong’s movies and that is her ability to deliver the best. And once again, she pulled it off in this emotional story that centers on domestic violence, love, faith, passion and betrayal. The movie’s message is simple: Do not be fooled by beautiful, glittery wrappings of gifts.

7. 30 Days In Atlanta



You won’t be remiss in saying that this is one of the most hilarious and interesting comedy movies ever produced. AY Makun, put the laugh in this one with his flawless character representation. You will be gasping for breath, holding your sides as you collapse into laughing fits.

8. Singles, Married and Complicated

This star-studded movie produced by Ghanaian actress Yvonne Nelson is one of the biggest Ghana – Nigeria movie-stars collaboration, and it is not surprising that it premiered in over 7 cinemas on the day of its release. Catch the fun, dirty little secrets, drama, and intrigue with this one.

9. A Place in the Stars

This brilliant movie took Steve Gakus over 6 years to produce. It was inspired by the events that occurred during the tenure of the late Professor Dora Akunyili, the then Director General of NAFDAC. It tells the story of a young lawyer who felt he got the case of his life – the one case to make him a big boy. But it’s not smooth sailing as he finds himself in an unfamiliar world of danger, crime and death. How did it end? Find out in this fantastic movie.

Cast: Gideon Okeke, Segun Arinze, Matilda Obaseki, Yemi Blaq, Femi Branch, Dejumo Lewis.

10. When Love Happens

Everyone loves a happy ending, and so did 28 year old Mo, the event planner who makes every brides dream come true by planning the perfect weddings. Only problem is, she was always looking from the sidelines, never in the thick of love. Worry and frustration finally drives her to go find love in places …places you would know when you watch this movie.

Cast: Weruche Opia, Helen Paul, Desmond Elliot, OC Ukeje, Beverly Naya, Oreka Godis, Gideon Okeke, Wale Oho, Keppy Epeyong Bassy and Shaffy Bello.
