Maddocks has promoted special counsel Karli Evans to partner from 1 January 2017.

Karli is a leading industrial relations and employment lawyer in the Maddocks Employment, Safety & People (ES&P) team in Melbourne. Karli works collaboratively with clients to manage workplace issues, including navigating difficult and sensitive employee claims, facilitating workplace change and developing labour strategies which assist employers to capitalise on opportunities under the current workplace relations regime.

She has experience acting for Australia’s largest employers across a broad range of industries, including construction, ports, technology, health, retail, aviation, telecommunications, agribusiness, education, financial services and transport.

Karli’s recent work includes advising employers on enterprise bargaining strategies and right of entry disputes, resolving complex general protections claims, overcoming legacy conditions in business acquisitions, federal building code compliance, minimising dismissal claims arising from restructures, navigating flexible work requests, avoiding sham contracting arrangements, protecting commercial information from departing employees and managing sensitive executive terminations.

Karli is a leading employment litigator and has assisted clients with matters of national significance in the Federal Court, High Court and Fair Work Commission.

Karli’s recent litigation work includes prosecutions in the Federal Court against union officials for contraventions of the Fair Work Act (including unlawful industrial action and right of entry breaches), and assisting employers to defend unfair dismissal and general protections claims in the Fair Work Commission.

She was recently listed as a ‘Rising Star’ in Employment and Workplace Health and Safety in Australia in Doyle’s Guide 2016.

Karli joined the national ES&P team from Herbert Smith Freehills in 2015. Her promotion comes one month after Vanessa Andersen joined the Maddocks ES&P team in Sydney from Henry Davis York.

Karli said she was delighted to be appointed as a partner in such a high calibre team.

‘Our team adds value by working collaboratively with business leaders to resolve complex and potentially high-profile matters in a way that meets their commercial objectives and minimises adverse outcomes,’ Karli said.

‘More than ever before, businesses face unprecedented market pressures. I work tirelessly to ensure our clients develop labour strategies that capitalise on every possible advantage in a difficult economic environment.’

Partner and Melbourne ES&P team leader Lindy Richardson said the appointment was recognition of Karli’s outstanding contribution to the team.

‘Karli assists clients find pragmatic solutions to complex problems, and is highly regarded for her leadership on workplace strategy and innovation,’ Lindy said.
