We start with the standout team of the term, Tarannau, who are unbeaten in their league, and are joint top of North West with Lancaster University following four wins from four games, including doing the double over both Manchester Universities (Metropolitan and University of Manchester).

Badminton have fared well too this semester, with the women’s team being top of their league following an unbeaten first semester including victories over Swansea University’s first and second teams. The Men’s first team are second in the league and are unbeaten at home. Meanwhile, the second team’s season started well with two wins and they find themselves second in their league also, despite a heavy loss to Swansea University in their final fixture of the semester.

Aberystwyth’s female basketball outfit (Aber Sharks) lead the way as they are unbeaten at home, having only lost one match all semester. The men’s team however, have only claimed one win and lost four matches but did claim an away win at Cardiff 2nds in mid-November.

The Men’s cricket season has been restricted to indoor play, due to some narrow defeats they are yet to claim a win this season with all their BUCS fixtures having been played at the SWALEC Stadium’s Indoor Cricket Centre. Their female counterparts have also played all their fixtures in the capital city but have managed to claim two victories from four matches over Bristol 1sts and Cardiff 1sts. Women’s Fencing have not experienced the best start to their season, with four losses from four matches whilst the Men’s First team have claimed three wins from six including a good away win at the University of the West of England in early December.

The University’s strongest men’s football outfit do not partake in BUCS but play in the Spar Mid Wales League, but the official BUCS first XI, thanks to a win over the University of Gloucestershire in December have their first win of the season. The second team are top of Western 6B and have only lost one home league fixture so far. Having only played four fixtures, the Women’s team sit fourth in their league following one win from 4 matches, which came at the start of the season. Aberystwyth University’s Golf Club have won two fixtures from 3 and are fifth from 7 in their league, mainly due to the fact they have played less games than the other teams in their league.

Women’s Hockey hit a mid-season purple patch with two successive home wins, but have not claimed a win since their win over Swansea University in November. The Men’s first team set the example with five wins from five which must be down to their defence which has only conceded one goal all semester. The Men’s second eleven sit fourth in Western 4B and are yet to lose at ‘The House of Pain’. Women’s Lacrosse have won a game from four in a very competitive Western 2A league, whilst the Men’s outfit have not won since the start of November, but they are still fourth from eight in their respective league. Aberystwyth University Netball Club firsts have had an up and down start to their season by claiming some good away wins, but losing tight home fixtures and are third in Western 3B and the second team claimed their sole league win in early October but came close away against USW Pontypridd and Cardiff seconds in their final fixture before the break.

Y Dreigiau Rugby League have found it tough this season, and are still looking to claim their first win in Western 1A. Women’s rugby union are unbeaten including a very good win at home against UWE 1sts in November and are two points behind league leaders UW Trinity Carmarthen. The Men’s Rugby Union side are unbeaten on Vicarage Field, and are awaiting to be awarded their bonus points for the semester, but should be happy with second spot in Western 2B. In Western 4B the Second fifteen play and are still looking for a win but came close on the last Wednesday of term against Cardiff 6ths. Aberystwyth Men’s squash team claimed their first league win at home to Cardiff Seconds in early December and face a daunting second half of the season.

The Men’s table tennis team have experienced a difficult start to the season as they sit bottom of a very difficult Western 1A league and are yet to claim a victory. Aberystwyth University Men’s Tennis have won two of their three fixtures, whilst their female counterparts sit second in their league after 2 wins, a tie and a loss during the first semester. Men’s Waterpolo are bottom of  Western 2A and are still searching for an elusive first win, despite coming close against Cardiff Metropolitan 1sts in November.

The season restarts on Wednesday January the 28th. To keep up to date with all #BUCSWednesday news and score follow @abersmSport on Twitter.
