They go by many names…Hot Dogs, Wiener Dogs, Sausage Hounds and Dachshunds. Whatever you want to call them, hundreds of these dogs are flocking to Harrisburg to have a dog-gone good time at the National Specialty Dachshund Show.

Exhibitors from around the country have brought their more than 500 dachshunds to compete for best in show. There’s lots of wiggle room in what they look like! There are three kinds of coats: long haired, wire haired and smooth haired. They come in two sizes: mini and standard. And when it comes to colors there are lot’s of choices: red, black, tan with all sorts of patterns.

The pups compete in two categories: Rally and Obedience. Dog owners told us Rally is when you do little things like walk with the dog on a leash and it sits, makes a U-turn, figure eight, etc. With the Obedience category you work off the leash and the dog has to stay in a healing position.

The Dachshund Club of America Inc. said this is the most important dog show for Dachshunds in the United States. They said they are mostly breeders looking to improve their dogs and this is the showcase of the breeding stock. Many other at the event say the main goal is to have a good time.

If you don’t want to miss out on the fun stop by the Best Western in Harrisburg. The event comes to a close Saturday night May 7th, 2016.
