HARRISBURG, Pa. (WHTM) – A program that gets milk into the hands of people who need it the most is the theme for this year’s butter sculpture at the Pennsylvania Farm Show.
The sculpture unveiled Thursday depicts a food bank worker pouring milk into a glass held by a little boy standing next to his mother while a dairy farmer watches with his cow. A refrigerated case filled with gallons of milk has the words “Fill a Glass with Hope.”
Made from nearly 1,000 pounds of butter, the sculpture showcases a program in which Pennsylvania dairy farmers ship milk to Harrisburg Dairies to be processed for the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank where it is sold at a discounted price.
Jim Victor and Marie Pelton of Conshohocken began carving their creation in mid-December.
At the end of the Farm Show, the butter donated by Land O’ Lakes in Carlisle will be given to a Juniata County dairy farm, where it will be put through a digester and converted to about 65 kilowatt hours of electricity to help operate the farm and homes in the community.
The Pennsylvania Farm Show runs eight days, beginning Saturday.
