In the initial years after its launch, Aadhar was associated with tagline – “ Aadhaar aam aadmi ka adhikar ” – used for its campaigning and advertising. However, it is no more an Aam Aadmi ka Adhikar…. Yes, you heard it right. Here’s why?
The Aadhar Project, which forms an integral part of Digital India programme, has surely been a topic of much debate ever since its implementation (the Supreme Court ruling out the Government’s plea to make Aadhar Card mandatory for the welfare schemes, for instance).
The latest update to the Aadhar project from the government is an alteration to the tagline that follows Aadhaar. It now says “Mera Aadhaar, Meri Pehchaan” which mean “My Aadhaar, My Identity”.
This article explores the reasons behind this modification from the original phrase “Aam Aadmi ka Adhikar” to “Mera Aadhaar, Meri Pehchaan”.
‘Aadhar’ No More ‘Aam Aadmi ka Adhikar’ – Why it was changed:
Recently, a petition was filed before the Prime Minister’s Office by Delhi BJP Spokesperson, Mr. Ashwini Upadhyay seeking correction in the tagline of Aadhar from the initial words “ Aadhaar Aam Aadmi ka Adhikar ”.
The reason being that the words “aam aadmi ka adhikar” which mean “Aadhar is Right of Common man” cannot be linked to the economic status of a resident.
Moreover, Aadhar card is the right of every Indian whether he or she belongs to the below poverty line category, economic weaker section, low or high income group.
One school of thought is also that, Aadhar as a project, is for everyone from any section of the society. Hence the tagline which felt being resonated only by the “common man” needed to under go a change. As it unintentionally would have deterred the high income groups from getting an Aadhar as they might have felt they are “not the common man” and the benefits are only for the common man and not necessarily for them.

The 12-digit Aadhar number issued by UIDAI serves as a proof of identity and address for residents, anywhere in India. It has made the delivery of services to the beneficiaries easier for the government as the unique identity project helps in identifying fake beneficiaries and eventually eliminate them from availing the services. From the perspective of residents, it removes the intermediaries, leakages, corruption and other inefficiencies in the process of obtaining subsidies.
