Being half-Swedish, we must admit to being partial to most things Scandinavian.  So when we heard a new Danish café was opening on Golborne Road last week, we jumped at the chance to go try it out.  Set up by Westbourne Grove locals Kell and Jacqueline Skött, Snaps & Rye is beautifully designed – light and airy with reclaimed pine wooden floors and Danish design classics such as an Arne Jacobson clock and PH lamps by Louis Poulsen.  The food is delicious – Smørrebrød (open sandwiches) made with homemade organic rye bread, which takes over 48 hours to prepare and bake, and classic toppings such as house-cured herring alongside meatballs and wonderful winter-warming pumpkin soup.  We were particularly taken with the home-cured salmon with fennel pollen and Akvavit.  To finish off, there is a selection of Danish pastries and house-infused Akvavit snaps.  The menu focusses on organic, seasonal and sustainable produce and it will change daily – with local deliveries available and take aways too.  There’s also a great selection of Danish books, home accessories and gourmet specialities available to buy. If you like liquorice, especially the salty variety, then don’t miss the Lakrids liquorice which is gluten free and some of the tastiest we have had in a long while.  There feels like a lot of love, thought and passion has gone into Snaps & Rye and we can’t wait to go back.
