A day after President Pranab Mukherjee appointed Narendra Modi as the Prime Minister of India, the BJP strongman will submit his resignation as Gujarat chief minister to the Governor at 3 pm on Wednesday.

Party sources said that after Modi submits his resignation, BJP legislators will hold a meeting to elect the successor to the PM-elect, appointed as such by the President on Tuesday.

10: 45 am: Narendra Modi leaves for Gujarat Assembly to handover duties as chief minsiter. Reports say that Moid will bass on the reins to Anandiben.

9:40 am: Hailing Modi’s appointment as the Prime Minister of India, BJP leader Vitthalbhai Hansrajbhai Radadiya said that the Gujarat will prosper and develop more with the BJP strongman attaining the top post.

Vitthal is infamous for pulling a gun at a toll booth attendant. He quit the Congress and joined the BJP in February this year.

9:00 am: BJP leader OM Mathur confirms that Narendra Modi will resign today as Gujarat Chief Minsiter and party MLAs will hold a meeting at 4 pm and elect the new CM.

‘Anandiben to be next Gujarat CM’

While the BJP has not made an official announcement about who will succeed Modi, party sources said that Anandiben Patel, the revenue minister, was set to be the next chief minister of the state.

Modi reached Gujarat on Tuesday evening after addressing the newly elected MPs of BJP and its allies in the central hall of Parliament.

President appoints Modi as the PM

After his address, he went to meet President Pranab Mukherjee. This was after a delegation of 15 members of NDA, led by BJP president Rajnath Singh had called on the President and handed over a letter stating that Modi has been elected as leader of BJP parliamentary party.

Later a Rashtrapati Bhavan communique said – “Shri Narendra Modi, leader of the BJP parliamentary party, called on the President at 1515 hours today. As Shri Narendra Modi has been elected as BJP parliamentary party and BJP has the majority in the House of the people, the President appointed Narendra Modi as the Prime Minister of India and requested him to advise the names of others to be appointed members of the Council of Ministers,” PTI reported.

The BJP won a massive mandate in the 2014 Lok Sabha polls winning 282 seats on its own and 335 seats along with its ally. The Congress meanwhile was decimated ending up with only 44 seats – its worst ever tally.

Sad on quitting as MLA: Modi

Modi on Tuesday said that he was sad on quitting as MLA but the people of Maninagar were happy that he had become the Prime Minister of India.

He posted on the micro-blogging site Twitter – I am sad on quitting as MLA but people of Maninagar are happy. Infact, when I won in 2012 they said PM PM. Their affection is touching.”
