Shopping for clothes can be a daunting task. There is so much to choose from and usually a limited budget, so how do you decide what to take home? To help you out, I’ve selected my top 15 winter cover-ups. In my opinion, if you have one of each you can rock just about any trendy winter look.

These are my top cover-ups and how to wear them

1. The Parka

Della Rose Ladies Parka Jacket (R1399, Old Khaki)

The Parka jacket has been trending for a few seasons now and is one of those investment buys that will deliver for years more, whether you wear it in the city or on a trip to the Karoo. I recently bought this one from Old Khaki and it has become one of my favourite pieces. It’s warm enough so that I can wear only a light sweater underneath, so you don’t have to de-layer for five minutes every time you enter a building. The hood is big and the fur lining, which can clip off, feels really soft and cozy against your face.

2. The cardigan

Yodo cardigan (R699, Mango)

Long-length cardigans are everywhere at the moment and are great to wear under your coat for added warmth or as a light cover up. Go boho with Navajo prints and fringe detailing, or try the classic route with a camel wrap cardi worn over a polo neck with some riding boots and a felt hat.

3. The polo neck

Cable Front Turtle Neck (R599, Cotton On)

Yes, the polo neck has made its comeback. I like wearing it underneath my poncho, or alone with some jeans and boots.  Go for a cable knit pattern for that ‘cabin-in-the-woods’ look.

4. The Puffer Jacket

Marcinda Puffer Jacket in Navy (R899, Old Khaki)

According to Old Khaki ladies wear buyer, Lulenka van der Linde, this is the must-have jacket for the season and no, you don’t have to keep it aside for camping trips. Throw it over a tartan shirt, a pullover or hoodie, with cigarette jeans and some sneakers for a casual weekend look.

5. The classic pullover knit

Daniela Ladies Pullover (R599, Old Khaki)

The classic pullover is going to come in handy this winter. Choose one with a narrow collar so that you can wear it over your button-up shirts – it should fit just under the shirt’s collar. I particularly love this one from Old Khaki for the diamond pattern. Wear it with a boyfriend coat or a blazer, and some lace up booties.

6. The Poncho or blanket scarf

Oversized Check Poncho (R1 249, Country Road)

Ponchos, blanket scarves and capes are all trending right now. You can go the bohemian route with some tribal prints, or try a something more down-toned for a classic appearance. Wear it with skinny jeans, long boots, a polo neck sweater and a floppy felt hat.

7. Chuck Tailors

Converse Chuck Tailor All Star High Top Sneakers (R789, spree.co.za)

Any sneakers can be worked into your wardrobe but I particularly like the classic white Chuck Tailor All Stars. They’ve been a staple since forever and are a must for any closet. The high-tops are probably the more popular choice at the moment. Cuff your jeans so that they sit just above the tops of the shoes.

8. Faux Fur

Lilac faux fur gillet (R1499, River Island)

Yes, faux fur is a thing. You can either play it down with a fur collar, cuffs or coat lining, but if you’re feeling a little braver why not try a full fur coat or gillet? Wear it with skinny jeans, boots and a beanie or throw it over a soft white dress with some stockings and a floppy hat.

9. The Boyfriend Coat

Mery overcoat (R2 299, Mango)

This season we’re borrowing from the boys a lot and the over-sized coat is a must if you love the look. I prefer wearing these with skinny jeans and some lace up booties, but you can also go full-fledged boyish with some boyfriend jeans. Dress it up even more with stiff-rim fedora hat.

10. The Trench Coat

Iconic Trench in Calico (R2,299, Trenery)

Thanks to Burberry the trench coat has become an iconic fashion piece and every wardrobe should have one. The beige trench is the classic choice but I also love navy this season. You can dress it up with skinny jeans, boots and a polo neck sweater, or go casual with sneakers.

11. The Leather Biker Jacket

Genuine leather biker jacket (R3599,95, Tom Tailor Denim)

Thanks to Grease, the leather biker jacket is another one of those iconic pieces that comes back into trend over and over again. Wear it with skinny jeans and a long-bodied shirt or over a hoodie for a more casual appearance. The classic choice is black, but you can also opt for grey or tan.

12. Riding Boots

Caterpillar Corrine Ladies Boots (R2 599, Old Khaki)

Long boots are a winter essential and this season I’m loving equestrian inspired styles. They have that “landed-gentry” quality (think Downton Abbey) and will go perfectly with your skinny jeans, a button up shirt, pullover knit, and trench coat.

13. The Bomber

Angeles Bomber Jacket (R799, Mango)

The Bomber Jacket has taken on a 90s persona this season, with a vintage football gear feel to it. It’s a very cool, casual piece and goes well with skinny jeans, a beanie and your All Stars.

14. Block Heels

Lampley Congac boots (R1 699, ALDO)

Block heel boots are a great statement piece to dress up an outfit. The thicker heel also means more comfort- bonus! I love wearing these with skinnys but they also look really cool with boyfriend jeans.

15. Lace-Up Booties

Halker Cognac Boots (R1 499, ALDO)

Flat ankle boots are available in so many variations, from biker styles to gummies. I prefer leather lace-ups simply because they’re multi-purpose. Whether you’re going boho, boyish or grunge, they’ll earn their keep. Wear them with jeans that have been cuffed till just above the top of the boots, or try pairing them with stockings and cute cable-knit socks that have been rolled down once.
