Oscar winning director Martin Scorsese returns to the director’s seat with what promises to be a gripping, heart-wrenching new adventure. Based on a novel by Shūsaku Endō, Silence is set in the seventeenth century and sees two Portuguese Jesuit priests travel to Japan to locate their mentor, Father Ferreira, a man who is said to have renounced his faith. It is a time when Christianity is outlawed in Japan and the two come face to face with violence and persecution that will test their faith.
I am even more curious about this film because of the cast. Andrew Garfield has shaken off his Spiderman costume for a much more serious role as Father Sebastião Rodrigues. He is joined by Adam Driver (Girls and Star Wars: The Force Awakens) as Father Francisco Garrpe, with Liam Neeson taking on the role Father Cristóvão Ferreira. I will be interested to see how Scorsese guided these actors in a genre that is quite different from what they are use to.
The book on which the film is based is Shūsaku Endō’s most highly acclaimed novel, which won him the 1966 Tanizaki Prize. It also caused great controversy in Japan after it was published.
I am definitely looking forward to this one.
