SWAMI Vivekananda was a pioneer in spreading Sanatana Dharma in the world. He was the first Hindu Guru to cross the oceans and go to the west to spread the teachings of the Rishis, paving the way for many spiritual Gurus to follow later. His clarion call at the Chicago Parliament of Religions on September 11, 1893 for tolerant coexistence of religions is more relevant today than ever before.
Basic Observations
The Rasi chart has Sagittarius rising with the Sun in it. It shows a Dharmic and fiery disposition, leadership qualities and regal charm. The Moon with Saturn in the 10th show a Yogic and austere public life. Mercury and Venus in the 2nd the 2nd lord in a sign ruled by Mercury and Jupiter's 83% aspect on Mercury and 92% aspect on the 2nd show a gifted orator. The Samasaptaka positions of the Ascendant lord Jupiter and 5th lord Mars (in Moolatrikona), within 2° produces a powerful Raja Yoga giving great fame. Rahu in the 12th in a watery sign shows travel to foreign countries. The biggest aspects on the Ascendant are 70% aspect by the 8th lord Moon and 66% aspect by functional malefic Saturn, both from the 10th house. This shows ill-health due to exertion and hard work.
Varga Charts
Chara Dasa can also be applied to divisional charts as Parasara has never said that this system Dasa can be computed only for the Rasi chart. He says it starts from the 1st house and goes on till the 12th Zodiacally or anti- Zodiacally. Parasara mentions which Varga chart is used for which area of life. If he first says that parents are to be seen from Dwadasamsa and then says that the 4th house shows mother, it has to be the 4th house that is to be considered in Dwadasamsa. .... Thus considering houses in the divisional charts is quite valid. As a corollary, applying Chara Dasa also to the divisional charts may be deemed valid.
In Navamsa (D-9), the sub-divisional chart for Dharma and matters relating to marriage,Scorpio rises with the 5th lord Jupiter in it in a friendly sign. It shows that the inner sense of being in the native is shaped strongly by Vedic Dharma. Taking the 9th house of Dharma as the Ascendant, its lord is conjoined with Yogakaraka Mars in the 12th. This shows that going abroad helps in fulfilling his Dharma. The Moon and Mars show a fierce humanism guiding his sense of Dharma.
Chart 1: Swami Vivekananda: Born January 12, 1863 at 6h. 33m. 00s. (5:54 East) at 22 N 34, 88 E 20.
Sagittarius Ascendant
Swami Vivekananda was born on January 12, 1863 at 6h.33m. LMT (5h. 54m. East of GMT) at Kolkata, India. If this time is taken to be in 1ST (5h. 30m. east of GMT) Swamiji's Ascendant would be Capricorn. But Sagittarius as the Ascendant as given by DR B.V. RAMAN in his Notable Horoscopes is the correct one, the birthtime given being in LMT. With Sagittarius Ascendant, the Shodasavarga charts give a clear picture of Swami Vivekananda's life and mission. Sagittarius also very aptly describes the regal personality of the Swamiji.
There is a Raja Yoga between the 10th lord Venus and 5th lord Jupiter in a quadrant and the Moon is also involved producing Gaja Kesari Yoga in the Dasamsa (career). In the Vimsamsa (spiritual sadhana), the 4th, 5th, 7th and 10th lords are together in the 9th house ruling Guru and God which give rise to several Raja Yogas.
The 7th house, however, is afflicted by two functional malefics Saturn and Mercury which is not conducive to marriage. Similarly, in the Saptamsa chart showing progeny, the 5th is vacant and without significant aspects while the 5th lord is in the 6th with Rahu. Again this is not conducive to progeny.
Leo rises in the Dasamsa (career and work done). There is a Raja Yoga between the 10th lord Venus and 5th lord Jupiter in a quadrant and the Moon is also involved producing Gajakesari Yoga.
Swamiji's biggest strength was dhisakti or his intellect and power of judgment. The Badhaka lord Mercury and Saturn are in the 6th house in Nakshatramsa. His biggest weakness was a doubting skeptical (Saturn) analytical (Mercury) mind. Mars and Rahu are in the 8th. His second biggest weakness was haste and a short temper. With his Guru's grace, he overcame these weaknesses much before coming into limelight.
In the Vimsamsa (spiritual sadhana), the 4th, 5th, 7th and 10th lords are together in the 9th house ruling Guru and God which give rise to several Raja Yogas. Swami Vivekananda received guidance from a great Guru which helped his spiritual sadhana tremendously.
In Shodasamsa (comforts), the 8th house contains 5 planets. No wonder he deprived himself of comforts and luxuries and lived a simple austere life.
In the Nakshatramsa (strengths and weaknesses), Pisces rises with Jupiter in it. His biggest strength was dhisakti or his intellect and power of judgment. The Badhaka lord Mercury and Saturn are in the 6th house. His biggest weakness was a doubting skeptical (Saturn) analytical (Mercury) nature. Mars and Rahu are in the 8th His second biggest weakness was haste and a short temper. With his Guru's grace, he overcame these weaknesses much before coming into limelight.
Chara Dasa Application
Rasi Chart
Using Chara Dasa for the Rasi chart as given by Parasara in Brihat Parasara Hora Sastram.Swamiji was in Virgo Dasa from January 1881 to January 1889. Virgo contains a Saturn-Moon combination and shows Vairagya. This Dasa shows renunciation. Taking Virgo as the Ascendant, the Ascendant lord Mercury joins the 9th lord Venus in the 5th house of wisdom. The shows getting wisdom through the blessings of Guru.
From January 1889 to January 1897, he was in Leo Dasa. Leo is the 9th house of fortune. Taking Leo as the Ascendant, Ascendant lord is in the 5th house in a very friendly sign and the 9th lord is in the 9th in his Moolatrikona. This is a Dasa of fame and fortune. In the Dasa Pravesha Chakra cast for January 12, 1889 for 12h. 01m. (1ST), the Sun and Jupiter are in Sagittarius, the 5th house from the Dasa sign. This shows fame. The 7th lords Saturn and Rahu are in Cancer, the 12th house of long journeys, showing travel overseas. The 9th and 10th lords Mars and Venus conjoin in Aquarius, the 7th house showing interaction with people in Dharmic activities.
From January 1897 to January 1907, Swamiji was in Cancer Dasa. Cancer is the 8th house. Taking Cancer as the Ascendant, Ascendant lord joins the 7th and 8th lord in the 3rd. Functional malefics from Cancer afflict the 7th house from Cancer showing death is possible. In the Dasa Pravesha Chakra cast for January 12, 1897 for lh. 42m. (1ST), the 8th lord Rahu is in the 7th with a functional malefic and that can show death.
Varga Charts
Parasara has never said that Chara Dasa can be computed only for the Rasi chart. He says it starts from the 1st house and goes on till the 12th Zodiacally or anti-Zodiacally. If these houses can exist in divisional charts, Chara Dasa can also be applied to divisional charts.
After defining various divisional charts such as Navamsa, Dasamsa, Vimsamsa etc., Parasara mentions which chart is used for which area of life. If he first says that parents are to be seen from Dwadasamsa and then says that the 4th house shows mother, it has to be the 4th house that is to be considered in Dwadasamsa. Likewise if he says vehicles, comforts and discomforts are to be seen from the Shodasamsa and then says that the 4th house shows vehicles, it means we have look at the 4th house in Shodasamsa for these matters. Thus considering houses in the divisional charts is quite valid. As a corollary, applying Chara Dasa also to the divisional charts may be deemed valid.
As per Chara Dasa of Vimsamsa, Scorpio Dasa was from January 1878 to January 1888. Scorpio falls in the 11th or the house of fulfilment of desires. Taking Scorpio as Ascendant in natal Vimsamsa, exalted 5th lord Jupiter is in the 9th and shows getting a very good Guru due to poorvapunya. The next Dasa was Libra. Leo is the 10th house ruling Karma in society. Taking Leo as Ascendant, exalted Jupiter in the 10th shows an active role in society related to spirituality. A functional benefic (9th lord Mercury) in tlfe 5th can show some fame.
Taking Chara Dasa in Dasamsa, Sagittarius Dasa was on from January 1892 to January 1903. Sagittarius is the 5th house ruling fame. Taking Sagittarius as the Ascendant, the 5th lord aspects the Ascendant and 9th lord is in 10th house with Ketu. It can show fame relating to spirituality. The Gajakesari Yoga involving Ascendant lord in the 12th house can show fame overseas.
Longitudes in Vargas
Apart from taking longitudes of planets in the Rasi chart, we can also take their longitudes in divisional charts. For example, suppose Jupiter is at 11° Sagittarius. We know that 10° to 13° 20' in Sagittarius is mapped to Cancer in Navamsa. Mapping 10° in Sagittarius in Rasi chart to 0° in Cancer in Navamsa and 13° 20' in Sagittarius Rasi to 30° in Cancer in Navamsa, we can map positions in between proportionately. So Jupiter in this example at 11° Sagittarius is at 1° x 9= 9° in Cancer.
Special Transits
Conjunctions and Samasaptakas of slow moving planets, eclipses and stationary position of slow moving planets can trigger life changing events when they conjoin or aspect key positions in the natal Rasi Divisional charts.
In 1881 April, Jupiter and Saturn conjoined at 7° 08' in Aries. The Ascendant lord Jupiter is at 5° 38' in Libra and 5th lord Mars is at 7° 34' in Aries. So the Saturn-Jupiter conjunction activated poorvapunya (5th lord) and the moulding of the personality (Ascendant lord). In natal Vimsamsa, the Nodes are at 4° 50' in Aries. Saturn-Jupiter conjunction of 1881 also triggered the Nodes (internal churning, search for truth and deep transformation) in Vimsamsa (spiritual sadhana). A few months after this trigger, Swamiji met his Guru Ramakrishna Paramahamsa and his life changed slowly.
At the end of May 1886, Jupiter became stationary at 4° 42' in Virgo. In natal Vimsamsa, Moon is at 5° 05' in Virgo. Triggered by stationary Jupiter, the 7th lord Moon in the 9th gives fructification of Guru's guidance (taking the 9th house of guidance from Guru as Ascendant, the 11th lord is in the 1st). From the 9th lord (Guru), Mercury in Aquarius, the Moon is in Maranastana in the 8th. He can also show Guru leaving his body. In the ensuing months, his Guru transferred his Shakti to Swamiji and gave up his body.
There was a solar eclipse at the end of August 1886. The Sun was in Leo in own sign with Rahu. In natal Vimsamsa, this is the 8th house of inheritance. From the 9th lord of Guru in Vimsamsa, this is the 7th house of death.
At the end of March 1893, there was a Jupiter and Rahu conjunction at 9° 29' Aries. In the Rasi chart, the 5th lord Mars is at 7° 34' Aries. Jupiter-Rahu conjunction triggered the natal 5th lord and shows fame possibly through unconventional or non-traditional means. In natal Dasamsa, the mid-point of the 11th lord Mercury and 9th lord Mars is at 8° 44' in Aries. The Jupiter-Rahu conjunction within a degree from this point triggered fulfilment (11th) of fortune (9th) in his work (Dasamsa). This transit also triggered Rahu at 6° 58' in Leo, in the 12th in Chaturtamsa which took him abroad.
Swamiji Will Return
Swami Vivekananda gave up his physical body at 21h. 10m. on July 4, 1902 at Belur. The Punya Chakra is cast for his death-time.
Punya Chakra: July 4, 1902 at 21 h. 10m. (Zone 5h. 53m. East) at 22 N 38, 88 E 18.
Swamiji had earlier told students at San Francisco: "1 have to come back once more. The Master said I am to come back once more with him." This corroborates what Sarada Devi also had said. According to her, Ramakrishna Paramahamsa had told her and his niece Lakshmi that he would come back after 100 years and that everybody associated with him would have to come back with him.
The Punya Chakra does not have a powerful 12th house and does not show Moksha. The lord of the 7th house ruling desires is the Moon and he is with the Sun and Mercury in Gemini. Interestingly, the natal chart of Ramakrishna Paramahamsa also has the Sun, Moon and Mercury in the Ascendant in another airy sign. Swamiji's last thought was most likely Ramakrishna Paramahamsa. Based on Krishna's teachings in the Srimad Bhagavad Gita, this suggests that Swamiji could take his next birth with some of the Paramahamsa's qualities •
